UN-Habitat Income Management Internships in Nairobi

The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.


The Communication Division internship is for 6 months. The Internship is UNPAID and fulltime. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the direct supervision of the Officer-in-Charge, Donor Relations & Income Management the intern will:

  • Assist in maintaining financial data on donors, including graphical analysis by donor, region, theme;
  • Assist in maintenance and update of information on earmarked and non-earmarked income contributions and pledges, including upload of the updated income information on the agency’s intranet and donor information system and the donor page public site. This includes financial data on donors, including graphical analysis by donor, region, theme;
  • Assist in providing and verifying contribution history of donors used by Executive and Senior Management to support their missions. Details should include the countries, themes, programmes
    supported and contribution trends of the donor;
  • Assist in monitoring all contribution grants - this includes provision of monthly reports on grant performance and issues, ensuring that reports are provided to donors on time, and alerting of any issues relating to income, expenditure or financial closure of grants;
  • Assist in preparing income trend analysis and financial forecasts on a regular basis to inform management decisions and as part of the annual report preparation;
  • Assist with the preparation of the unit’s annual work plan, and with monitoring and following up on delivery of outputs and results against the plan;
  • Liaise with the finance unit to ensure that all new contributions are acknowledged and systematically send thank you letters and receipts within agreed timescales;
  • Support donor consultations and other meetings of the unit including planning, reporting and logistics.

    Education

  • Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
    a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
    b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
    c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.Be computer literate in standard software applications.
  • Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • Studies in marketing, advertising, public relations,communication or any related field preferred.
  • Basic html coding and database management skills are a requirement. Must also have strong organizational ability.

    Work Experience

  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable
