UN Environment's Communication Division communicates UN Environment's core messages to all stakeholders and partners, raising environmental awareness and enhancing the profile of UN Environment worldwide.

These two positions are located in the Communication Division at the Nairobi duty station. Under the supervision of the Head of Web the incumbent will carry out the following duties:

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the development, programming, testing, debugging and implementation of new application systems releases, modules and functionalities.
  • Develop, build website back-end using Drupal and implement frontend for websites based on designs using UN established standards for web development, IT technologies, programming languages and tools.
  • Serve as team member in the planning, specification, design, development, implementation and support of computer application systems; independently liaise with users to define and specify requirements.
  • Install web application modules ; monitor website performance using appropriate monitoring tools and produce monitoring reports.
  • Prepare technical and user documentation for deployed website, application systems, as well as training materials and conducts technical presentations.
  • Maintain functional specifications for websites, programs and procedures developed and/or modified.
  • Provide support for deployed website including version management, data recovery and deployment to users’ offices; perform ongoing reviews with users and developers and responds to users requests.
  • Manage the functional aspects of the Google Analytics and assure that all parameters are set correctly based on corporate requirements
  • Draft correspondence and communications, including work plan revisions and other related issues, as well as prepares unit contributions for a variety of periodic reports.
  • Serve as focal point for coordination, monitoring and expedition of web-based projects, involving extensive liaison with diverse organizational units to initiate requests; prepares standard terms of reference; processes and follows-up on administrative actions and resolves issues related to project implementation, e.g. organization of and participation in training, procurement of equipment and services, etc.
  • Keep abreast of developments in the field; perform bench marking and proposes new acquisitions.
  • Provide guidance to new/junior staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Education

  • Completion of secondary school is required.
  • Supplementary training in Information Technology is required.
  • MUST have passed the United Nations Administrative Support Assessment Test (ASAT) or the Global General Service Test (GGST) at Headquarters or an equivalent locally-administered test at Offices away from Headquarters.

    Work Experience

  • A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in web development, information systems analysis and programming, systems administration and maintenance, software development, technical writing or related area is required.
  • Proficiency in Drupal;
  • Excellent knowledge of commonly used Drupal modules, such as Views, CCK, Taxonomy, Features; experience with version control (GIT), such as creating branches, tags, etc. and working in a multi-developer environment; extensive knowledge of web development (PHP, mySQL, HTML/CSS, Javascript); extensive knowledge of and experience with cross browser web development for IE, Firefox, Safari and Chrome and Familiarity with principles of responsive web design and HTML/CSS/JS frameworks (Bootstrap) is also required.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

    Assessment

  • Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

  • Appointment against this post is on a local basis.

  • This position is open for recruitment for an initial period of one year and may be subject to extension.
