The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

UNEP's Early Warning and Assessment Division (EWAD) is responsible for analyzing the state of the global environment, providing early warning information and assessing global and regional environmental trends to catalyze and promote international cooperation and action on the environment. This post is located in the Scientific Assessment Branch of the EWAD in Nairobi, Kenya. Under the direct supervision of the Chief, Global Assessment Unit, the incumbent will perform the following duties:

Responsibilities

  • Works with Global Assessment Unit and partners to facilitate the development, implementation, and evaluation of global and thematic assessments, including: Participating in the development, implementation, and evaluation of assigned programmes/projects; Monitors and analyzes programme/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and propose corrective actions; liaise with relevant parties; Identifies and tracks follow-up actions. Performing assignments, in collaboration with the Global Environment Outlook (GEO) team or other clients, by planning facilitating workshops, through other interactive sessions and assisting in developing the action plan the team or client will use to manage the change. Researching, analyzing and presenting information gathered from diverse sources.

  • Provide substantive support for Global and Thematic Assessments and related policy coordination and evaluation functions, including: Assisting in policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies. Undertaking survey initiatives; designs data collection tools; reviews, analyzes and interprets responses, identifies problems/issues and prepares conclusions. Preparing various written outputs such as draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies and inputs to publications.

  • Provide administrative and substantive support to the Global and Thematic Assessments consultative process and other meetings, conferences, outreach activities, to include: Providing substantive support to consultative and other meetings, conferences, to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations. Undertaking outreach activities; conducts training workshops, seminars; makes presentations on assigned topics/activities. Participating in or leading field missions, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other

  • Coordinate activities related to budget and funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements) and prepares related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget).

  • Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.

    Competencies

  • Professionalism: Knowledge
    and understanding of environmental assessments, such as the Global Environment Outlook and supporting services, such as capacity building, knowledge generation and support for policy making, theories, concepts and approaches relevant to the design and implementation of major global and regional integrated environmental assessments. Ability to perform a broad range of administrative functions, e.g., budget/work programme, human resources, database management, etc.

  • Teamwork: Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals; solicits input by genuinely valuing others' ideas and expertise; is willing to learn from others; places team agenda before personal agenda; supports and acts in accordance with final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect own position; shares credit for team accomplishments and accepts joint responsibility for team shortcomings.

    Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in an environment-related field, environmental planning and management, environmental science, natural science or a related field is required.

  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

  • Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

    Work Experience

  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management in an environmental, social or economic science, or a related field is required.

  • Experience in the coordination of global or regional environmental assessments including the coordination of different stakeholders, government counterparts and external experts; and addressing ecological and environmental challenges in complex contexts is desirable.

  • A minimum of two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of other UN official languages is an advantage.
