The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The overall objective of UNEP's Industry and Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive.

The Division promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities. The position is located in the Finance Initiative Unit (FI) of the Industry and Economy Division at the Nairobi duty station. Under the supervision of the Head of Unit, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

Responsibilities

• Facilitates and promote leadership on sustainability by financial institutions in Africa and the Middle East. Engage the broader membership in work programme implementation and help monitor members’ progress in implementing industry frameworks and targets.

• Supports technical capacity building for the roll out of guidance/methodologies/tools in the region. Expand membership and signatories to/endorsement of the Principles for Responsible Banking and Principles for Sustainable Insurance.

• Facilitates activities with the community of UNEP FI members in the region for awareness raising and knowledge sharing across financial institutions, as well as outreach to potential new members. Develop areas of cooperation with key stakeholders and expand UNEP FI’s network and partnerships with supporting institutions to advance the sustainable finance agenda in Africa and the Middle East.

• Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of assigned programmes/projects, etc.; monitors and analyzes programme/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and proposes corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; identifies and tracks follow-up actions.

• Performs consulting assignments, in collaboration with the client, by planning facilitating workshops, through other interactive sessions and assisting in developing the action plan the client will use to manage the change.

• Researches, analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources.

• Assists in policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies.

• Undertakes survey initiatives; designs data collection tools; reviews, analyzes and interprets responses, identifies problems/issues and prepares conclusions.

• Prepares various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc.

• Provides substantive support to consultative and other meetings, conferences, etc.,
to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations, etc.

• Undertakes outreach activities; conducts training workshops, seminars, etc.; makes presentations on assigned topics/activities.

• Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.

• Performs other duties as required.

Competencies

  • Professionalism: Knowledge and understanding of theories, concepts and approaches relevant to the development of financial institutions. Ability to identify issues, analyze and participate in the resolution of issues/problems. Ability to conduct data collection using various methods. Conceptual analytical and evaluative skills to conduct independent research and analysis, including familiarity with and experience in the use of various research sources, including electronic sources on the internet, intranet and other databases.

  • Communication: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; tailors language, tone, style and format to match audience; demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.

  • Planning and Organizing: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies; identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required; allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning; monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary.

    Education

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in environment, sustainable development or a related field is required.

  • A first level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of relevant qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

  • Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

    Work Experience

  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, administration or related area is required.

  • Experience working with the private finance sector, including with banks, institutional investors, and others is desirable.

  • Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.
