Org. Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

This assignment is intended to support UNEP's global work to strengthen the environmental dimensions of the One Health approach. This includes coordination across all of UNEP on One Health working with the partners of the Quadripartite Alliance for One Health and its initiatives, including the One Health High Level Expert Panel and the One Health Joint Plan of Action.

This position is part of the Secretariat of the new Nature for Health Fund and partnership, which will support countries in developing evidence-based policy, action, capacity, and governance mechanisms to enhance the multiple health benefits of investment in nature.

This position is located in the Biodiversity and Land Branch of the Ecosystems Division in the Nairobi duty station. The incumbent will report to the Coordinator of the One Health Secretariat and is responsible for the following duties:

Responsibilities
• Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of assigned programmes/projects, monitors and analyzes programme/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and proposes corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; identifies and tracks follow-up actions.
• Performs consulting assignments, in collaboration with the client, by planning facilitating workshops, through other interactive sessions and assisting in developing the action plan the client will use to manage the change.
• Researches, analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources.
• Assists in policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies.
• Undertakes survey initiatives; designs data collection tools; reviews, analyzes and interprets responses, identifies problems/issues and prepares conclusions.
• Prepares various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications.
• Provides substantive support to consultative and other meetings, conferences, to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations.
• Undertakes outreach activities; conducts training workshops, seminars; makes presentations on assigned topics/activities.
• Participates in or lead field missions, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties and drafting mission summaries.
• Coordinates activities related to budget and funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements,) and prepares related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget,).
• Performs other duties as required.

Professionalism: Knowledge and understanding of theories, concepts and approaches relevant to One Health, EcoHealth, Planetary Health and other integrated approaches to health, particularly from the environmental angle and with a focus on biodiversity and/or climate. Ability to identify issues, analyze and participate in the resolution of issues/problems. Ability to conduct data collection
using various methods. Conceptual analytical and evaluative skills to conduct independent research and analysis, including familiarity with and experience in the use of various research sources, including electronic sources on the internet, intranet and other databases.
Ability to apply judgment in the context of assignments given, plan own work and manage conflicting priorities. Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in ecosystem health, environmental health, veterinary medicine, public health or related fields is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.


Work Experience
  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, in the environment, health or ecosystem health sectors, is required.

  • Experience working in environment dimensions of health particularly biodiversity, climate and/or ecosystem aspects is desirable.

  • Experience in international secretariats and/or the management of multi-partner funds is desirable.

    Languages
    English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

    NOTE:"fluency equals a rating of "fluent" in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and "Knowledge of" equals a rating of "confident" in two of the four areas.

    Assessment
    Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
