Setting and Reporting The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.
UNEP's Division of Ecosystems works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and advisory services for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition.
This post is located in UNEP, Ecosystems Division at the Nairobi duty station.
Under the direct supervision of the Chief, Freshwater Ecosystems Unit, and overall direction of the Coordinator, Water Branch, the incumbent will perform the following duties:
Support the coordination of UNEP's initiatives directed at addressing the global water quality challenge:
Contribute to the development and implementation of the UNEP water quality initiatives; monitor and report on overall progress. Review relevant documents and reports; Identify problems and issues to be addressed and propose corrective actions and liaise with relevant parties.
Contribute to the development and implementation of the strategy and detailed workplan for developing International Water Quality Guidelines for Ecosystems to comply with UNEP Governing Council Decision GC 23/7.
Facilitate global and regional consultations and reviews of draft Guidelines and the production of the final draft Guidelines.
Prepare regular progress reports.
Keep new developments in water quality under review, develop strategic approaches to deal with emerging issues and provide policy guidance to stakeholders.
Provide technical expertise to and build capacity of governments to develop guidelines and policies.
Assist countries and regions in the identification, development and implementation of projects.
Participate in the development and implementation of UNEP's initiatives on promoting 'benefiting from aquatic ecosystems' in water resources management.
Support the preparation of papers.
Coordinate the Interdivisional Water Group (IDWG).
Support the preparation of project proposals for fundraising and negotiating with potential donors and implementing partners.
Prepare progress assessment reports.
Support the process of compiling UNEP's to water and environment–related publications.
Backstop the organization of meetings, conferences and other fora.
Perform other related duties.

Advanced University Degree in water resources management or a field related to environmental management.
A first university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in integrated water resources management, environmental management or related field is required.
Knowledge of global institutional mandates handling water resources issues is desired.
Experience at the international level is desired.
UN experience is an advantage.
A track record in programme/project management, including writing proposals for fundraising is an asset.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.
Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.
