Organization Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

UNEP's Corporate Services Division is the guardian of UNEP's corporate interest, mitigating its exposure to risk and supporting the organization with management tools, plans and related capacity building. It oversees UNEP's efficient and effective management, in line with UNEP's accountability requirements, rules, regulations and UN core values.

This post is located in UNEP's Programme Advisory Services Unit (PASU), Corporate Services Division at the Nairobi duty station. PASU provides seamless integration in operational areas which support and enhance programme delivery on behalf of Corporate Services Division (CSD). The Internship is for 6 months and UNPAID. Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Partner Operations Support Team Lead, the intern will:

  • Assist in the preparation of training materials, workshop materials, templates, and presentations.

  • Assist in the development of Standard Operating Procedures and related infographics and visual aids.

  • Support in the planning, specification, design, development, implementation, and support of computer application systems for Partnerships; independently liaises with users to define and specify requirements.

  • Supports the preparation of technical and user documentation for deployed computer application systems, as well as training materials.

  • Research, compile, analyse, summarize, and present basic information/data on specific programmes/projects, corporate policies and related topics, using various sources (e.g. computer assisted searches using the internet, intranet or other databases).

  • Support the monitoring and evaluation of corporate projects; categorize, update, track, and analyse data related to programmes/projects, e.g. accounting records, outputs, resources utilized, deviations/revisions, etc.

  • Prepare, maintain, and update files (electronic and paper) and
    internal databases.

  • Assist in the maintenance of a body of reference files, both paper and electronic, to ensure rapid retrieval of critical information; conduct reference searches upon request; participate in initiatives to enhance existing systems for records management and retrieval, including development of proposals for consideration.

  • Provide support in processing partnerships workflows.

  • Assist in organizing meetings, workshops, and training sessions, including logistical arrangements and documentation.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications/special skills

    Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent or higher);

  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);

  • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation;

  • Preferred area of study:Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in computer science, business administration, social sciences, or related disciplines No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
    Competencies

  • Required skills: - Communication - Client Orientation - Teamwork Preferred skills: - Planning and Organizing - Technological Awareness Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. Ability to draft news articles and/or social media posts is desirable. Ability to design surveys and polls is desirable.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in written and oral English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
