Organizational Context

These job is found in Bangladesh Country Office. The staff member will work under the direct supervision of the Programme Officer Nutrition (Head of Nutrition Cox’s Bazar)

Job Purpose

To provide support to nutrition programmes and activities to contribute to meeting the nutritional needs of WFP beneficiaries and strengthening government capacity in Cox’s Bazar.

Key Account-abilities

  • The overall aim of this role is to provide technical support to the WFP Cox’s Bazar office on its nutrition strategy and programme implementation focusing on: planning, quality implementation, supervision, monitoring and evaluation, and documentation of critical experiences and programme results.
  • More specifically the Programme Policy Officer(Nutrition) will:
  • Contribute to the development of WFP Cox’s Bazar nutrition activities, plans and processes, ensuring alignment with wider nutrition policies and guidance
  • Provide technical assistance and liaise with implementing partners (internal and external) to monitor ongoing projects, ensuring effective collaboration, timeliness and efficiency, and highlight potential risks to project delivery.
  • Provide technical assistance to Government, particularly the Civil Surgeon’s Office for the implementation and scale up of Nutrition
  • Programmes particularly nutrition-specific programming for malnutrition prevention and treatment and emergency nutrition preparedness and response in collaboration with other humanitarian actors.
  • Support the identification of potential partners and partnership negotiations to ensure a collaborative and holistic approach to meeting nutrition needs.
  • Contribute to the preparation of proposals for WFP and Government nutrition specific and sensitive programme funding and partnerships as and when required.
  • Support the capacity building of WFP staff and partners including government staff to prepare for and respond to nutrition needs, for example through the preparation and review of training materials and on the job supervision for further strengthening of MAM treatment.
  • Support the revision and finalization of the integrated BSFP/TSFP protocol and guidelines in collaboration with the Nutrition Sector and relevant stakeholders
  • Research and analyse policy and operational issues to support senior colleagues in the development of policies, programmes and activities.
  • Ensure a coordinated approach in line with WFP standards and procedures and in alignment with government policies and strategies, in collaboration with other nutrition stakeholders in Cox’s Bazar
  • Technically support and enhance capacity for the development and co-ordinate data gathering and monitoring/assessment systems for nutrition specific and nutrition sensitive interventions ensuring that rigorous quality standards are maintained in Cox’s Bazar.
  • Technically support and enhance capacity for tracking and analysis of data to provide input into reporting activities and contribute to the preparation of accurate and timely reporting on nutrition activities that enables informed decision making and consistency of information presented to stakeholders.
  • Represent WFP in coordination fora and platforms, to facilitate consultation and collaboration with key government bodies, the sector and partner organisations.
  • Provide guidance to support and junior staff, acting as a point of referral and supporting them with programme administrative and financial processing tasks, and assisting them with nutrition analysis and queries.
  • Any other tasks as required and deemed appropriate.

    Standard Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Advanced University degree in human nutrition and/or public health nutrition or related subject.
  • Language: Excellent written and oral communications skills in English and Bangla
  • Experience: At least 5 years of experience in Food Security, Nutrition Security and/or related fields possibly with a UN organization, or international development organization

    Knowledge & Skills:
  • Good understanding on the Nutrition situation in Bangladesh and the knowledge of the National Plan of Action for Nutrition 2;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, consistency in follow-up, ability to work with diverse teams, capability and initiative to provide timely technical advice and independent ability to facilitate coordinated planning and subsequent follow-up on implementation and reporting;
  • Action management and results orientation;
    Identifies early warning indicators and reacts on them;
  • Strong capability to manage and collaborate across organizational units;
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with multidisciplinary/multicultural team;
  • Proven capacity to coordinate and communicate with Government officials and cooperating partners

    Other Specific Job Requirements
  • Keep informed on national policies and targets in improving food security, health and nutrition for the poor and vulnerable, particularly for women and children;
  • Knowledge on Government strategies in achieving food security and nutrition targets;

    Desired Experiences for Entry Into the Role
  • Experience and/or exposure to nutrition project assistance in development settings (or comparable education specialization)
  • Has contributed to new roll-out and expansion of technical nutrition programmes
  • Experience in conducting trainings and workshops as well as skills in participatory approaches
  • Experience conducting nutrition assessments with both NGOs and UN is a strong asset
