Organizational Context

The Regional Bureau for East and Central Africa, located in Nairobi, provides strategic and policy guidance as well as technical support to WFP operations and activities in nine countries: Burundi, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Kenya, Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan, Djibouti and Uganda.

We are currently seeking to fill the position of a Food Quality & Safety Intern based in the Procurement Unit of the Regional Bureau, Nairobi.

Standard Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in the University and have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies or have recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate programme within the last 6 months from a university preferably in Food Chemistry, Food Microbiology, Food Engineering, Mathematics; or other related field;
  • Currently enrolled in a graduate programme (Masters degree) from a recognized university and have attended classes in the past 12 months;
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point);
  • Fluent in English (both oral and written) is a must; knowledge of a second UN language, preferably French would be an asset.

  • Food Safety and Quality Management within WFP Supply Chain
  • Supplier Quality Assurance management
  • FSQ Lead auditing skills
  • Incident management and root cause analysis methodologies
  • FSQ in Food Fortification, School Meals programme, CBT
  • System continual improvement tools, e.g Statistical process control, Total Quality Management in Supply Chain
  • Food Quality & Safety awareness training

    Key Account abilities
  • Working closely with the Procurement team to ensure food quality and safety information is accurately captured in tenders and contracts
  • Supporting in food quality incidents investigations by ensuring all information needed from the field (i.e. from Country Offices) is available for the Regional Bureau and to Headquarters in order to respond accordingly
  • Analytical data collection and analysis from Inspection Company for different commodities which will also become basis for supplier performance evaluation
  • Collating Aflatoxins analytical data from Blue Box which will be the basis for evaluating the effectiveness
    of WFP initiatives in managing mycotoxins in the region
  • Reviewing all commodity inspection reports to ensure all specified contract parameters are captured accurately and the recommended test methods are applied by the inspection company
  • Supporting in internal assessment of WFP storage facilities and following up on implementation of corrective and preventive actions
  • Responding to urgent Country Office needs and liaising with RB FT if need be, where escalation is required e.g verifying
  • specifications, reviewing food quality reports where there is no FT, establishing available local regulatory requirements etc.
  • Prepare monthly incidents & corrective actions status, Food Release Status Report and any other reports as may be advised from time to time for all commodities in collaboration with the technical team
  • Providing any technical guidance/support when called upon by any other unit.

    Terms and Conditions
  • Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the maximum amount of US$1000 per month depending on the duty station of assignment.
  • WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
  • Depending on the duty station of assignment, WFP will reimburse travel ticket for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.
  • WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognized institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education;
