Organizational Context

The Regional Bureau of East and Central Africa, located in Nairobi provides strategic and policy guidance as well as technical support to WFP operations and activities in nine countries: Burundi, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Kenya, Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan, Djibouti and Uganda.

We are currently seeking to fill the position of Emergency Preparedness & Response Intern based in the EPR Unit of the Regional Bureau, Nairobi.

Standard Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in the University and have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies or have recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate programme within the last 6 months’ from a university preferably in Social Sciences, Disaster Management, Agriculture, Range Management, Development Studies, Environmental Science, or other fields.
  • Currently enrolled in a graduate programme (Masters degree) from a recognized university and have attended classes in the past 12 months, Fluent in English (both oral and written) is a must;
  • knowledge of a second UN language, preferably French would be an asset.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (word, excel, access, outlook).

    Key Account-abilities
  • Under the overall supervision of the Head of EPR the intern is responsible for supporting the WFPs’ corporate mission of countries to achieve Zero Hunger (SDG2) and partner to support implementation of the SDGs (SDG17).
  • Act as the Focal Point for the Emergency Preparedness and Response Package (EPRP) for the Bureau.
  • Key tasks include working following up with Country Offices to update the checklists (MPAs, ERAs) Contingency Plans, and the Risk Register;
  • Work with the EPR team at the Regional Bureau to support the capacity strengthening of country offices to effectively implement
  • Emergency Preparedness and Response activities, as well as the EPRP tool, by regularly disseminating relevant information;
  • In collaboration with all units and Country Offices, assist the EPR team with the establishment of an operational plan to respond to crisis in the region, through the reviewing of Concept of Operations and IR-PREPs etc.;
  • Produce and contribute to the preparation of briefs, presentations
    and reports on the regional Emergency Preparedness and Response activities;
  • Engage in EPR activities that provide opportunity for cross functional learning and work on a specific project by way of sharing their experiences from the different functional areas;
  • Conduct desk research, reviews and analyses of key documents relating to Emergency
  • Preparedness activities and the Emergency Response to the crises in East Africa region;
    Support in the synthesis and production of regional contextual risks in East and Central Africa region;
  • Any other duties as required

    Terms and Conditions
  • Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the maximum amount of US$1000 per month depending on the duty station of assignment.
  • WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
  • Depending on the duty station of assignment, WFP will reimburse travel ticket for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.
  • WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognised institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education;
  • The internship has a maximum duration of 8 (eight) months and offers college students and graduates the opportunity to combine work experience and professional development with formal education.
