The WFP Regional Bureau for Eastern Africa (RBN) is based in Nairobi and provides strategic direction, technical guidance, resource mobilization, and management support to WFP operations and activities in ten countries: Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, and Uganda.

Job Purpose

The Environmental Unit within the RBN Administration Unit helps Country Offices mainstream environmental management across WFP operations, through the implementation of Environmental Management Systems (EMS). Current focus areas include reducing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, minimizing and properly managing waste, reducing water consumption, promoting sustainable procurement decisions, and increasing staff awareness around environmental management.

Standard Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled with at least two years undergraduate studies completed, or recently graduated (within the last year) in Environmental/energy/water Engineering, Environmental Studies, Environmental Management, Environmental Economics, Natural Resource management, Sustainable Development, or a related field, or

  • Currently enrolled or recent graduate of an advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) highly regarded

  • Fluent in English (both oral and written) is a must; knowledge of a second UN language, preferably French, would be an asset

  • Excellent command of MS Office (especially Excel); experience with communications tools is a plus

  • Experience in google suite applications will be an asset

    Key Accountabilities (not all-inclusive)

    The Environmental Management intern will bring new ideas and approaches to RBN’s Environmental Unit. Under the direct supervision of the Regional Environmental Officer, the candidate will perform the following duties:

    Environmental Data Collection and Analysis

  • Contribute to regularly tracking and updating environmental data for RBN, including energy management and sustainable waste management;

  • Contribute to develop a comprehensive energy consumption analysis for RBN premises to inform priority energy efficiency/renewables interventions and fundraising for decarbonization;

  • Contribute to WFP’s annual environmental footprint reporting exercise, by liaising with Country Offices to help collect, review, analyse and report data on energy usage, water consumption and waste generation for calculating WFP’s environmental footprint.

    Technical advice to COs

  • Assist the Regional Environmental Adviser and Environmental Management Assistant to research, plan and implement environmental projects (either within the context of EMS implementation or as stand-alone initiatives) to address significant environmental aspects and impacts and deliver continuous improvement in environmental performance;

  • Conduct research on appropriate, locally available and innovative sustainable energy/waste/water/procurement
    solutions;

  • Support country offices to identify and comply with national environmental regulations, specific requirements from donors and other stakeholder obligations.

    Environmental Management System Implementation

  • Contribute to the compilation and update of environmental action plans for country offices where EMS is being implemented;

  • Support the Environment unit to monitor and report implementation progress of EMS action plans.

    Communications, Training and Awareness

  • Support to develop communications material (e.g. slide decks, fact sheets, videos, articles, guidelines, reports) with environmental content to showcase the environmental work of Country offices;

  • Contribute to the development and dissemination of awareness raising material on environmental themes and promote behavioural change

  • Participate in the development and delivery of EMS training for different levels of staff in different Country Offices within the region

    Training Components and Learning Elements

    Training components

  • The intern will be provided access to a series of e-learning resources on environmental sustainability at WFP/within the UN system; practical training on the principles and functioning of Environmental Management System (EMS) according to ISO 14001 and of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (the global standard for GHG reporting); exposure to professionals from several functional areas within WFP with whom the Environment team collaborates on a daily basis.

    Learning Elements

  • The intern will gain practical experience in corporate environmental sustainability reporting and in the implementation of EMS in a large, international organization and will learn to use a series of information management and visualisation software including ARCHIBUS, Cority and Tableau.

  • They will also gain experience in drafting technical and non-technical documents for different audiences, as well as preparing for, participating in, and documenting findings of meetings, workshops, and training sessions for a range of stakeholders.
