  • The WFP Regional Bureau for Eastern and Central Africa (RBN) is based in Nairobi and provides strategic direction, technical guidance, resource mobilization and management support to WFP operations and activities in ten countries: Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan and Uganda.

    Background and Purpose of Assignment

WFP works in over 80 countries worldwide ensuring no child goes to bed hungry and that the poorest and most vulnerable, particularly women and children, can access the nutritious food they need.

  • As WFP implements and augments its private sector engagement strategy across the East Africa region, a dedicated business development specialist is needed to augment the region’s portfolio of work with high-value prospects, opportunities and programmes to attract resources, technical assistance, and innovative solutions to advance the work of organisation.

  • Reporting to the Head of Private Sector Partnerships at the Regional Bureau in Nairobi (RBN), the business development consultant will have the unique opportunity to influence WFP's work in the region and to ensure that by working in innovative ways with corporate sector partners, WFP delivers real results for the millions of people in the region who face food insecurity.

  • Priorities for enhanced private sector engagement in the region for 2022 is an actionable regional business development strategy to be supported by a robust and thorough land scape of opportunities in priority RBN led Country Offices along the following dimensions: 1) income; 2) impact and 3) innovation. The focus will be to build a pipeline of opportunities and prospects and provide support, strategic planning and implementation across the region.

    Key Accountabilities/responsibilities:

  • Reporting to the private sector partnerships lead but working with all RBN units, s/he will be responsible for undertaking a thorough landscape analysis of the region and to provide a strategic business development plan of action.

  • Working together with RBN’s private sector team, s/he will be responsible for coordinating a landscape analysis process, including all phases from scope definition to reporting accruing inputs from technical units and working closely with functional units in RBN, Country Offices and Headquarters as needed.

  • Complete detailed research and analysis of private sector partners’ corporate engagement agendas to generate insights and develop recommendations.

  • Informed by all research and analysis completed, support the private sector team with developing
    a strategic vision, objectives, and key results for the business development plan that aligns with both regional priorities and global corporate strategy.

  • Collaborate with WFP stakeholders to integrate their knowledge and experiences into research, analysis and strategy to proactively address learnings and knowledge of the organization’s opportunities with corporate stakeholders.

  • Work with Country Offices in the region on strategic positioning to finalize concrete value propositions in sectors that show a pipeline of opportunities.

  • Support the finalization of the regional business development strategy.

    Deliverables at the End of the Contract:

  • Complete a corporate landscape analysis and report detailing recommendations on prospects who have interest, alignment and capacity in WFPs work

  • Development of a pipeline for RBN countries, identifying which high-value sectors

  • Priority programmes and prospects identified in Country Offices

  • Template of value propositions developed for priority programmes

  • Overall to produce an actionable business development strategy that supports strategic opportunities in countries as they approach private sector opportunities

  • Any other relevant duties as requested.

    Standard Minimum Qualifications

    Education:

  • Advanced University degree in Political Science, International Development, Development Economics, Marketing Communications or other relevant field, or First University degree with additional years of related work experience and/or Training/courses.

    Experience:

  • A minimum of five (5) years of relevant professional work experience in business development, fundraising, marketing, strategy development and/or other partnership roles.

  • Experience in international organizations/ companies outside of home country.

  • Demonstrable experience with international development issues and significant experience in developing relationships and managing strategic partnerships

  • Experience with private sector businesses and corporates

  • Technical skills & knowledge of project management.

    Desired Experiences for Entry Into the Role

    Knowledge & Skills:

  • Experience working in developing country context, preferably in food security or resilience projects or programmes.

  • Experience coordinating or leading a programme team or a component of a programme portfolio.

  • Experience in engaging in policy and strategy discussions and providing input into these.

  • Ability to analyse and identify opportunities for and propose solutions to programme quality improvement.

  • Analytical skills with ability to compile, analyse and interpret data, prepare reports, and draw conclusions and recommendations.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to deal patiently and tactfully with people of different national and cultural backgrounds and to manage external partnerships.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.

    Languages:

  • Fluency in oral and written English.
