This position is located at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Security and Safety Service (SSS-ECA), Office of the Executive Secretary.

Under the overall command of the Chief of Service, the Security Officer is required to perform security functions and reports directly to the Security Sergeant or supervising officer in the assigned working area.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Security Officer may be responsible for the following duties:

  • Screens all personnel, packages and vehicles entering the UN complex to ensure authorized access.
  • Operate SSS ECA physical/electronic security systems and communications systems.
  • Implement the proper application of SSS policies, Standard Operational Procedures, post-orders and daily orders.
  • Provide effective emergency response capability; be alert and respond to any potential or actual breaches of security, unsafe conditions, unusual activity and report these immediately.
  • Maintains logs and rosters and initiates chronological logs of events during emergency situations.
  • Prepares daily and weekly work schedules and various periodic reports.
  • Provides information and directions to all persons associated with the organization.
  • Controls pedestrian and vehicular traffic; enforce ECA parking policy.
  • Provide security coverage for UN conferences and special events.
  • Ensures that all UN property being carried from the complex is checked for appropriate documentation.
  • Maintain a high level of physical fitness.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

    Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required. Must have passed the United Nations Security Officer Test (SOT).
  • A diploma in Police/Military, Law, Business Administration, Social/Political Science, Computer Science or related field is desirable.

    Work Experience
  • A minimum of four years of experience in civilian police force, military police, or other relevant security operations is required.
  • Experience of working in different security sectors and/or a client focused organization is desirable.

    Languages
  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
