Background

Conflict and underdevelopment have plagued South Sudan for decades, leaving its children out of school, malnourished and vulnerable to disease, abuse and exploitation.

The prospect of a better future following the country’s independence in 2011 was short-lived following the eruption of a civil war in 2013.

To articulate the situation of children and women in South Sudan there is need for massive advocacy at various levels Through communication the need to safeguard the rights of children in South Sudan and to save lives through continued humanitarian assistance remains a priority for stakeholders, including donors, legislators, and influencers.

A prudent approach therefore is to have on hand long-term agreements with photographers, who can be brought on board to address visual communication needs on an ad hoc and as-needed basis.

Objective

  • Produce professional and compelling photos, which reflects the situation of women and children in South Sudan, UNICEF activities and UNICEF beneficiaries for advocacy and fundraising purposes.

    Activities, Tasks and Budget

    Tasks:

  • With UNICEF guidance, develop, plan and schedule pre-production, production, and post-production
  • Obtain consent for photo usage from concerned people and authorities. UNICEF will provide consent forms and other guidance
  • Take note of names, age and other relevant details of person’s photographed. This information is to be used in captions
  • Take note of the situation of the person photographed is in and key points of their story. This information is to be used in captions
  • Photograph the situation of children and women; success and challenges
  • Photograph UNICEF activities as guided
  • Photograph UNICEF staff
  • Photograph beneficiaries
  • Photograph contextual images as guided
  • Provide photos with extended captions in metadata ready for dissemination
  • Naming of the files should be consistent with UNICEF South Sudan Photo Library guidelines. UNICEF South Sudan to provide the photographer with the guidelines
  • Ensure the photos takes are in line with UNICEF photo guidelines

    Expected deliverables:

  • Photos in line with UNICEF photo guidelines ready for dissemination with captions in metadata
  • All photos to have extended captions
  • All photos with a main character must have captions with basic information about the person featured
  • Photos to be in JPEG format

    Budget:

  • Indicate daily rates for:
  • Travel days
  • Production days
  • Post production days

    Qualifications

  • Experience in professional photography with a minimum of 5 years of work experience
  • Experience in humanitarian response
  • Ability to communicate complexity in a visually appealing
    and child-friendly manner
  • Awareness of and/or experience with UNICEF’s humanitarian principles
  • Awareness of and/or experience with UNICEF’s activities in South Sudan
  • Experience working in a conflict/ post-conflict environment desirable
  • Fluency in English
  • Knowledge of local languages in South Sudan is an asset

    Conditions of work

  • The photographer will be required to have his or her own equipment and be available for travel immediately as needed
  • Payment will be based on number days worked at the established daily rate. The total amount will not exceed the value of the contract unless amended
  • Materials shall conform to UNICEF ethical reporting guidelines and appropriate visual portrayals of children and adults
  • The consultant should be available for assigned work at the request of UNICEF South Sudan.
  • Transportation permitting, the consultant should be prepared to travel when and as requested by the Office
  • The consultant will be paid DSA at established rates in all locations and will be responsible for direct payment of accommodation and meal costs at each location
  • Flights will be provided by UNICEF by the most direct and economical routes according to planned official travel
  • Consultants are not entitled to payment of overtime.
  • All remuneration must be within the contract agreement
  • No work may commence unless the contract is signed by both UNICEF and the consultant
  • A signed contract copy or written agreement must be received by the office before Travel Authorization is issued
  • The consultant may not travel without a signed travel authorization prior to the commencement of official travel
  • The consultant should make arrangements for health coverage prior to arriving in South Sudan
  • The consultant will not be entitled to R & R and all related entitlements
  • All photos will remain the property of UNICEF
