Our client’s principal activity is the manufacture and sale of cement. The Company has operations across the Eastern African region.

To assist in the management and turnaround of the company, our client now wishes to recruit a results-driven Chief Financial Officer (CFO).

Key responsibilities

  • Reporting to the Managing Director, the job holder will be responsible for leading and managing the organisation’s finance function.
  • S/he will play a signifi cant role in enhancing the company’s control environment, ensuring timely and up-to-date reporting and in generally turning around the Company’s fi nances, in addition to general management responsibilities.
  • Timely and accurate reporting is vital to the fi nancial planning and analysis function of the role.
  • In line with this, the CFO will be assisted by a team of Plant Accountants and Controllers. As the company has operations in various countries operating different bank accounts and using various exchange rates, the CFO’s role in leading the Treasury function is of major significance.
  • The CFO will also be required to work with his/her peers to thoroughly understand the organisation’s cost drivers through the Industrial Director and revenue drivers through the Commercial Director. The CFO will be expected to propose solutions to bring about efficiency in these areas that will increase profitability. The job holder will also be responsible for:
    Financial Planning and Analysis
  • Develop and implement robust budget and rolling forecasting processes for all operations in the region that drive business performance.
  • Oversee the implementation of the analysis of strategic financial business planning and tax strategies in order to control impact across the company.
  • Develop, measure, and maintain key financial metrics.
  • Ensure that the budgeting process delivers well-defined operational plans and country level targets to meet business objectives.
  • Enhance financial controls, policies, procedures and processes that support strategic business plans.
    Continued development of financial systems.
  • Participate in the corporate policy development process.

    Financial Reporting

  • Management and financial reporting to the Managing Director and Board of Directors.
  • Monitor financial performance against budget plans, preparing periodic reports, explaining variations, highlighting risks and upsides and recommending and implementing appropriate actions to reflect changing circumstances.
  • Timely and accurate preparation of financial reports and meeting of reporting deadlines for all entities under the organisation
  • Compliance with taxation, capital, regulatory and statutory accounting requirements.
  • Financial Operations
  • Lead the Finance function and be responsible for all aspects including tax, treasury, financial planning and analysis and compliance to regulatory and statutory reporting requirements.
  • Oversee cost controlling of the plant and reporting on plant costs.
  • Manage all the organisation’s accounts in the various countries and currencies to ensure adequate, accurate and efficient deployment and allocation of funds
  • Review and approve expenditure documents received from all departments.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of finance department and evaluation of subordinates.
  • Produce monthly & yearly P&L, balance sheets and cash flow.
  • Liaison and maintain relations with Bank/lender and other authority/public contacts, including Kenya Revenue Authority.
  • Ensure the organisation discharges its financial commitments promptly and efficiently and has adequate
    cash flow to do so.
  • Appraise and evaluate proposals affecting the business that have significant financial implications.
  • Co-operate with the auditors to accomplish year-end audit and quarterly interim audits in a timely and efficient fashion.
  • Enterprise Resource Planning
  • Oversee the current iScalar ERP system and possibly a new ERP in the next 2 years
  • Propose process enhancements to transition into a top of the range ERP system in the next few years.

    Key Collaboration Network

  • Ongoing engagement with Senior Management to provide financial information key to decision making.
  • Continuous engagement with subsidiaries across the region to ensure performance matrices are achieved
  • Ensure effective and timely communication and information sharing between all relevant parties
  • Ongoing engagement with auditors and outside consultants, as required
  • Represent the company externally to current and future clients, investors and markets as required
  • The successful candidate will have a Bachelors’ degree in Commerce or a related degree as well as a CPA (K) qualification, and should be a registered ICPAK member of current standing.
  • An MBA will be an added advantage. The ideal candidate will also possess 10-20 years of overall professional experience; preferably with one of the Big 4 accounting firms coupled with leadership experience gained in the manufacturing/industrial sector including hands-on experience leading and managing an accounting team.
  • At least 5 years’ experience presenting financial reports to a Board and Senior Management is a must.
  • The candidate should also possess strong communication and relationship building skills with an ability to work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • They should also have a high level of integrity with a commitment to transparent reporting and analysis.
  • The candidate will be required to have experience in the implementation and use of computer based accounting and integrated financial reporting systems, with an exceptional understanding of how technology can be used effectively to improve operational efficiency.
  • Experience in a turnaround environment will be an added advantage. They ideal candidate must conform to the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya.
