  • The Foundation has carried out numerous projects in East Africa, with a focus on Ethiopia and Somaliland and is now looking to expand into Rwanda.

  • The key strategic pillars for the philanthropic side of the Foundation are education, health, water and agriculture.

  • At the end of 2019, the Foundation also started its Social Ventures franchise to prioritise sectors where the Foundation believes a real impact can be made by establishing self- sustaining businesses, which focus on job and economic value creation.

  • Headquartered in London, the Foundation has an operational head office in Nairobi, Kenya with country offices in Ethiopia (Addis Ababa and Assosa) and Somaliland (Hargeisa) with further expansion plans in East Africa.


  • With social ventures modelling, the Foundation has envisioned establishment of the Diagnostic Center in Assosa town of BG regional state, to complement the curative health services in the region and beyond.

  • The Center will start with providing - advanced medical laboratory services. Envisage studies and additional optional lab tests will be added during the following years.

  • The Foundation wants to bring on board the Medical Laboratory Technologist who will serve as a Director to provide strategic leadership in setting up the best class of the Diagnostic Center in BG regional state and reporting to the Health Coordinator.

  • The Director will be responsible for the technical and overall leadership of the Diagnostic Center.

  • Particularly the following key responsibilities are expected from the position holder.

    Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the staffing need and planning using Workload Indicator for Staffing Need (WISN) method.

  • Defining the education and skills needed by each category of employee in all departments.
  • Coordinate recruitments processes to fill the remaining slots as per the standard.

  • Coordinate the premises remodeling works to make sure Diagnostic Center is inconformity to the standards.

  • Make sure a well-organized, adequately supervised with the necessary space, facilities and equipment to perform those services commensurate with the Diagnostic Center needs for its patients,

  • Ensure the Diagnostic Center is furnished with all items of equipment required for the provision of services and All equipment are in good working order, routinely quality controlled, and precise in terms of calibration,

  • Lead supply and consumable need planning; communicate to relevant units and follow timely delivery,

  • Coordinate the
    development of the policy frameworks for the operation and governance of the Diagnostic Center,

  • Develop technical and administrative SOPs expected to be in place to apply for the licence from the appropriate authorities.

  • Lead the development of the Quality Assurance/Performance Improvement program to determine the status of quality of service provided,

  • Closely work with the regulatory bodies to make sure the Center is fulfilling the expected requirements,

  • Serve as a licensee to apply for the registration of the Diagnostic Center with the appropriate regulatory authorities,

  • Make sure development of the systems and processes that minimise employees’ risks, protect employees and provide access to care when needed,

  • Develop monitoring and evaluation tools to assess activities and ensure key targets are being achieved,

  • Lead marketing and networking efforts to generate demand for the service of the Diagnostic Center,

  • Serve as Chief Technical Officer of the Center and coach and mentor the technical employees while conducting lab tests.

  • Ensure coordination and integration of the services with other initiatives of the foundation when relevant.

    Job Requirements

    Required Qualities and Skills

  • Masters/graduate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology; Medical Microbiologist preferred.

  • Have appropriate professional registration and license to operate

  • Minimum five years’ practical and hands on experience in setting up and running an advanced medical laboratory

  • Sound exposure to the private health services specially laboratories.

  • Ability to be creative and innovative in generating new ideas and putting them into practice.

  • High level of commitment and self-motivation.

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

  • Proficiency in the use of basic computer software.

  • Good writing and reporting skills.

  • Passion for improving health care especially in rural areas.

  • Ability and commitment to stay for at least two years working with the Diagnostic Center.

  • High professional and ethical standards.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, planning, coordinating and project management skills.

  • Fluency in English and Amharic are required.
