Requirements

For appointment to the position of Member of NET, an applicant must be in possession of the qualifications provided under section 125 (1) (a) of the Environmental Management and Coordination Act of 1999.

  • Be a person qualified for appointment as a Judge of the Environment and Land Court of Kenya, viz;

    (i) Hold a law degree from a recognized university, or be an advocate of the High Court of Kenya, or possess an equivalent qualification in a common-law jurisdiction.

    (ii) Have at least ten (10) years’ experience as a Superior Court Judge or professionally qualified Magistrate irrespective of whether that experience was gained in Kenya or in another commonwealth common-law jurisdiction; or

    (iii) Have at least ten (10) years’ experience as a distinguished academic or legal practitioner with knowledge and experience in matters relating to environment and land or such experience in other relevant legal field irrespective of whether that experience was gained in Kenya or in another commonwealth common-law jurisdiction; or

    (iv) Have held the qualifications specified in paragraphs (b) and (c) for a period amounting, in aggregate, to ten (10) years.

    (v) Meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution on Leadership and Integrity.

  • In addition, the applicants must demonstrate a high degree of professional competence, communication skills, fairness, good temperament, good judgment in both legal and life experiences and commitment to public and community service.

  • Be a member of a relevant professional body in good standing;

  • Meets the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution on leadership and integrity.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    A member of a tribunal shall discharge the following duties: -

  • Participate in hearing and determination of all disputes which come before the full bench;’

  • Recording proceedings in a clear and accurate manner;

  • Approving, sign, issue and certify orders, decrees and certificates of costs and copies of proceedings;

  • Writing awards, judgments, orders, rulings and decrees issued by the Tribunal;

  • Support implementation of the Tribunals’ plans and programmes to achieve the Tribunals vision and mission.

  • Provide requisite professional and technical support to ensure the Tribunal attains a high level of
    competitiveness and ethical standards in its entire programmes.

  • Undertaking any other duty assigned for the benefit of the Tribunal

  • A detailed and updated curriculum vitae, to include background information such as past employment record (if any).

  • Five (5) samples of any professional writings, including but not limited to judgments, advocacy submissions in courts, scholarly writings or any legal publications that the applicant has authored.

  • Names of three (3) referees; two (2) professional referee and one (1) character reference;

  • Copies of National Identity Card (I.D), Passport or any other relevant identifiable legal documents;

  • Copies of academic and professional certificates, testimonials and academic transcripts;

  • Applicant’s one (1) recent coloured passport size photographs

  • Shortlisted candidates shall be required to produce originals of their National Identity Card, academic and professional certificates and transcripts during interviews

    Successful candidates will be required to submit valid copies of clearance certificates from the following bodies on Appointment: -

  • Kenya Revenue Authority

  • Higher Education Loans Board

  • Directorate of Criminal Investigation

  • Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission

  • A recognized Credit Reference Bureau; and

  • Clearance from relevant professional body.

    Applicants must take note that it is a criminal offence to provide false information and documents in the job application and the same will be verified by relevant bodies.
