The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Research Associate II who will implement field work to support social science team on participatory action research and farmer-led scaling (https://www.cgiar.org/initiative/34-livestock-climate-and-system-resilience/) in Ethiopia.

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centers dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org.


Main duties and responsibilities:
  • Contribute to site selection, baseline, and inventory of climate-smart technologies available in study area;
  • Identify key actors for climate-smart technology packages in study area;
  • Plan, organize and facilitate workshops for local partnership, and provide summary reports of the discussions;
  • Conduct and support data collection activities (household survey, semi-structure interviews, FGDs and workshops;
  • Contribute to development and testing of a citizen science data collection tool;
  • Facilitate citizen science data collection with adaptation pioneers;
  • Contribute to assessment of social implications of technologies, validation, and scaling readiness;
  • Support formation of adaptation pioneers’ knowledge groups and networks development;
  • Facilitate participatory field days and farmer demonstration days;
  • Support development of user-oriented research findings, manuals, training materials, videos (translation from English will be required);
  • Build capacities of pioneers/pioneer groups and knowledge networks;
  • Continuous reporting, maintenance of project data filing system, attendance of (online) meetings and high responsiveness to supervisor requests on data delivery;
  • Transcription and translation of interviews
  • Data preparation and analysis
  • Frequent travel to farm sites, with considerable distance from main road
  • Any other relevant duty assigned by the supervisor.


    Academic and professional qualifications:

    Education:
  • Bachelors degree or Diploma in social sciences, development studies, extension
  • Background in social research, participation, climate change and adaption, extension, interdisciplinary understanding of both social and basic bio-physical sciences
  • Solid training in qualitative and understanding of quantitative approaches


    Experience:
  • Bachelor degree with a minimum of two years relevant research experience
  • Diploma with a minimum of four years relevant research experience
  • Strong experience with conducting participatory research and stakeholder engagement in rural context
  • Experience in data analysis and interpretation for both basic
    qualitative and quantitative analysis
  • Limited experience with quantitative survey design
  • Extensive experience with use of NVIVO, limited experience with R or STATA for quantitative data analysis
  • Strong aptitude at interpreting, synthesizing, and communicating the results of data analysis to various types of audience
  • General experience in social research, climate change and adaptation, farmer-led scaling


    Skills:
  • Good communication and networking skills
  • Based in Debre Birhan with sound work experience in North Shewa Zone
  • Fluency in English and Amharic

    Duty Station: Debre Berhan, North Shewa Zone, Ethiopia

    Grade: HG 11


    Minimum Base Salary:
    Birr 22,207 per month (negotiable depending on salary history of the candidate)


    Terms of appointment:
  • This is a National Staff (NS) position, initial appointment is for three years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding. The ILRI remuneration package for nationally recruited staff in Ethiopia includes a very competitive salary and benefits such as life and medical insurance, offshore pension plan, etc. The ILRI campus is set in a secure, attractive campus in Addis Ababa. Dining and sports facilities are located on site.
