Job Description

I. Program Description:

TechnoServe (TNS) Farm Africa and MELCA-Ethiopia as a consortium partners have recently launched "Growth for the Future (G4F) Programme II. Natural Resource Management for Resilience and Economic Development in Rural Ethiopia."

This Sida-funded project is the next phase of TechnoServe’s ongoing Majang Forest Livelihoods Project and implemented in the Majang Forest Biosphere area of Majnag zone. It is planned to continue until 31st December 2020.

TNS has identified the opportunity to help address two of Majang’s fundamental and interlinked development challenges—poverty and environmental degradation—through a holistic Phase 2 that focuses on (1) increasing incomes for men and women smallholder farmers from non-timber forest products (NTFPs); while a partner organization, Farm Africa and MELCA, an indigenous NGO, focuses mainly on (2) improving environmental governance of the forest and recently established biosphere reserve.

TechnoServe, an international NGO, is leading the livelihoods strategy and implementing livelihood interventions across both of Majang Zone’s woreda, Godere and Mengeshi, from our project office based in Meti Town, and integrating a market systems facilitation (MSF) approach.

II. Position Description

The role of Business Advisor may include:

  • Building the organizational, operational & financial management capacity of cooperative(s) in Mengeshi woreda to improve performance and better serve male and female members, with a focus on sustainably increasing members’ incomes. This many require training, coaching and supervising Associate Business Advisors.

  • Collecting and support the analysis of information about the three priority value chains: coffee, honey and spices, to inform the program’s evolving strategy and plan.

  • Develop and closely manage relationships with local government agencies, and other key stakeholders.

    III. Duties & Responsibilities

  • The BA will closely work with primary cooperative and union. S/he will also be required to support cooperative capacity building efforts as well as data collection and analysis related to market systems, upon request.

    Primary Cooperative and Cooperative Union Capacity Building and Support

  • Facilitate access to finance based on the realities and capabilities of the cooperative and banking partner.

  • Provide practical support and troubleshooting and advice to cooperatives to support them to effectively aggregate and market their produce (coffee, honey and/or spices).

  • Facilitate relevant and tailored trainings for cooperatives on business plans, financial management, good governance, post-harvest handling and quality.

  • Support/facilitate cooperative formation and growth in cooperative membership, services offered to members.

  • Support cooperatives to officially register as well as develop business plans and operational plans in a detailed and structured way.

  • Support Cooperative Union capacity building, market linkage and growth in primary cooperative membership.

  • Supporting women-led grain mills and promoting and supporting women leaders in cooperatives

    Management and Reporting

  • Develop and submit activity reports to the Senior Business Advisor; support impact monitoring and evaluation activities;

  • Participate in regular team training activities to build own training skills, including monthly team meetings in person;

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Senior Business Advisor.

    Strengthen PFM-Cooperatives

  • Manage and lead primary Cooperative Capacity building activities

  • Manage and closely work with newly established Farmer Cooperative Union leadership, support the union to be a functional business, creating value for members and promote newly established Majang Farmers Union to Key actors in the market system

    Report

  • Develop and circulate weekly 5-15 reports

  • Collect project progress update/ data from ABAs, organize (edit and add additional information in any) and send it to the SBA in a timely manner

  • Develop project quarterly status reports, biannual reports and annual reports on time, according to the signed project contract requirements;

  • Ensure quantitative reports on key project indicators, developed by M&E Administrator, are timely, rigorous and accurate.

    The BA’s Core Competencies should include:

    Job Requirements

  • Willingness to be based in Majang Zone, Mengeshi Woreda and willingness to spend significant time in rural areas;

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field – business, agricultural economics, economics, cooperative management etc.

  • At least 4 -7 years of professional experience— ideally private sector— in one or more of the following areas: business or cooperative management, SME development, agriculture, training or extension, finance.

  • Strong planning skills and experience working to strict time-guidelines;

  • Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural skills and well as negotiation and problem solving skills;

  • Willingness to drive a motorcycle;

  • In addition to Amharic, excellent English oral & written presentation skills

  • Computer literacy, including Word and Excel

    VI. Preferred Skills:

  • Familiarity with Majang/Gambella area

  • Ability to speak in relevant local language(s) & Motorcycle license

  • Experience working in promoting and supporting gender strategies
