Sun King Country Senior Data Scientist — Clean Cooking (PAYG LPG) Jobs in Kenya;The Senior Data Scientist’s work will be measured against commercial metrics of the PAYG LPG business, not model metrics alone. Within the first 12 months, the role holder is expected to:
Ship 2–3 data products into production use by commercial or operations teams, each with measurable impact on activation rate, refill frequency, dormancy/churn, ARPU or cost‑to‑serve.
Establish the BU’s approach to pricing and promotion analysis — elasticity estimates, uplift measurement and experiment design that commercial leaders use to make decisions.
Build monitoring for shipped models, with retraining triggers and clear ownership.
Key Responsibilities
Commercial
Develop first‑hand understanding of customer and commercial needs across markets, including field time with sales agents and customers.
Translate business problems into well‑framed statistical questions and present findings clearly to technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
Prioritise ruthlessly, focusing on data products that move activation, refill frequency, retention or unit economics.
Manage stakeholder expectations, product scope and delivery timelines for assigned workstreams.
Technical
Design, build and evaluate machine learning models for churn prediction, credit/payment behaviour, demand forecasting, anomaly detection and segmentation.
Apply probabilistic and Bayesian methods to quantify uncertainty and support decisions under uncertainty.
Design and analyse experiments (A/B tests, geo tests, quasi‑experiments) in field conditions.
Perform exploratory analysis, feature engineering and data wrangling on large datasets.
Partner with data engineering teams for pipelines and production infrastructure.
Track and communicate model performance, identify degradation and recommend retraining.
Maintain clean, reproducible, well‑documented code following team standards.
Role Clarifications
Not a people‑management role — this is a senior IC position.
Not an MLOps/platform role — pipeline and deployment infrastructure is owned by MLOps Engineer.
Not a reporting/BI role — dashboarding exists in the analytics team; this role
builds models and data products.
Qualifications & Competencies
Education
Degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, Economics or related quantitative discipline. Advanced degree is a plus but not required.
Commercial
Demonstrable track record of data products that measurably moved business outcomes.
Ability to empathise with customers and colleagues, identifying P&L impact before building.
Strong communication and storytelling skills.
Experience managing upwards on product needs, trade‑offs and timelines.
Technical
Five (5) to eight (8) years of hands‑on experience in data science or applied ML roles, with at least two (2) years owning data products end‑to‑end.
Strong command of classical ML methods and judgment to balance simplicity vs sophistication.
Solid grounding in probabilistic modelling, Bayesian inference and uncertainty quantification.
High proficiency in Python (scientific stack) and strong SQL skills.
Deep familiarity with model evaluation and business‑aligned metrics.
Experience with experiment design and hypothesis testing.
Comfortable with cloud data warehouses and experiment‑tracking tools (AWS, MLflow).
Preferred
Experience in PAYG, fintech lending, telco or emerging‑market consumer businesses.
Nice to Have
Survival modelling, causal inference or marketing mix modelling.
Operations research/optimisation exposure (routing, scheduling).
Familiarity with MLOps and AWS deployment (SageMaker, Lambda, ECS).
