The Education Manager will form part of the program team of Street Child Uganda and will report directly to the Program Manager.
The Education Manager will be responsible for improving that the quality of teaching that is being delivered throughout this program.
This will involve delivering teacher training sessions, leading regular one to one sessions with teachers and on the ground monitoring.You will be responsible for developing strategies and standards for, as well as managing the implementation of, all teacher recruitment, training (pre-service and in-service - including personal academic upgrading where required) and assessment.
Working alongside SCUK’s Head of Education to determine and, where required, designing, curricula and relevant teacher and student resources (e.g. textbooks etc)
Responsible for taking the lead in developing stronger relationships with all key education stakeholders at settlement level
Providing regular in-classroom mentoring support for teachers, particularly in issues such as effective lesson planning and teaching techniques;
Conducting additional and specialist training workshops for teachers during the school holidays;
Using tools and templates provided to effectively monitor and assess teachers’ classroom performance, providing guidance as required;
Supporting all student test / assessment processes.
Reporting weekly to Programme Manager on the progress of teachers;
Building excellent relationships with all other relevant local stakeholders – including NGOs; chiefdom authorities, local secondary schools etc;
Key personal characteristics / skills include:
A minimum of 5 years’ experience (ideally many more years) in a senior teaching position, preferably as a Head Teacher or Principal;
A higher teaching qualification/degree;
Excellent communication skills and the ability to write clear and concise reports in good English;
Strong knowledge and understanding of teaching methods, including lesson planning processes and tools;
Experience of conducting training workshops and teacher quality assessments;
A passionate commitment to the vision of seeing every child in Uganda realising their basic right and capacity to at least read, write and perform basic numeracy;
A resource and budget-sensitive mindset – mindful of the need to balance high standards with the imperative of stretching resource envelopes as far as possible, so as to benefit as many as possible of the hundreds of thousands of children in Uganda who presently lack, and are unlikely to acquire, these core life skills;
Strong inter-personal skills.
Strong knowledge and understanding of the importance of child protection and methods used to identify these issues, address these issues and refer them to the appropriate bodies
Highly desirable characteristics / skills include:
Ability to speak Acholil fluently
Ability to travel long distances by motorbike to schools in remote regions.
Strong awareness of key education issues and trends at national level – including good knowledge and understanding of the functioning of MEST centrally and at district level;
Ability to represent the organisation externally, including with partners and donors;
Ability to work easily with national and international colleagues alike;
A self-starter with a strong results orientation and with high levels of integrity, credibility and dependability;
An energetic team player who can effectively collaborate, and who can stand alone when necessary;
Demonstrated ability to work and deliver under pressure and on tight deadlines.

This role will be based in Kitgum, with regular travel to head office in Kampala.
This is a fixed term contract which will be in effect from January 2019 – 31st December 2019.
