Background of Project:

Inspired by African feminist values of sisterhood, solidarity and mutual aid, KOMBOA is a consortium of five feminist organizations comprising of the African Women's Development Fund (AWDF), Initiative Sankofa d'Afrique de l'Ouest (ISDAO), Purposeful, Doria Feminist Fund, and Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA) that have joined forces and resources to supports communities threatened by the rise of anti-rights and anti-gender movements.

The consortium exists to empower and uplift different communities within the dynamic and broad demographic of African women, girls, and gender-diverse peoples. Through evidence-based and community-informed strategies, we advance gender justice and center the experiences of their target communities, fostering a sense of hope and inspiration.

Women’s rights-based organizations and groups in the Greater Horn of Africa (GHoA) play crucial roles in providing frontline services to marginalized communities, advocating for gender-transformative policies and laws, demanding government accountability for human rights, and pushing for democracy.

However, the space for these organizations/groups to operate freely is shrinking, as government and non-state actors use legislation, threats, or violence to hinder their work. Despite these challenges, women’s organizing and agencies in the region continue to strive and challenge patriarchy and gender inequalities.

The mapping activity seeks to identify women organizations/groups, assess their movement building capacity and gender advocacy, inclusion and diversity with diverse constituency of disability, minority rights, young activists. The exercise will assess capacity, strategies, and resilience to influence policies and advocate for women activists as front liner defenders.

Aims of the stakeholder mapping.

The mapping activity is intended to recommend 10 formal and informal women’s rights-based organizations and groups in each of the countries-Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda within SIHA’s Network who are interested in or are engaged in movement building. Particularly the activity aims to;

  • Explorer the nature of women’s organizing in the region, advocacy capacity, and resilience to influence policies.

  • Identify points of synergy and learning, platform for solidarity, and practices of experience sharing embodied by the groups that can be further enhanced for effective advocacy and movement building.

  • The intersection between their advocacy and digital capacity to amplify impact and sustainability.

  • Document how diversity and inclusivity is mainstreamed in and by the groups.

  • Highlight capacity gap for movement building and resilience that may require support of the project.

    Deliverables of the stakeholder mapping.

    A précised and detail report of 10 mapped women organizations or groups in each of the countries identified, highlighting
    the socio-economic and political dynamic of movement building by these informal and formal groups; capacity gaps for movement building and resilience; diversity and inclusivity; learning practices; and use of digital skills.

    Activity:

  • Develop a stakeholder mapping tool that includes the methodology and data collection techniques.

  • Inception meeting to assess and agree on methodology, timeframe, and coordination.

  • Identify women's rights organizations/informal groups including their areas of movement building and resilience; advocacy capacity; scope; diversity and inclusion, digital capacity to influence movement building, geographical local; and contact persons.

  • Consolidate the findings into a draft report.

  • Meeting with SIHA team to review findings in draft report and receive feedback.

  • Drafting of final stakeholders mapping report incorporating any feedback.

    Deliverables:

  • Development of a stakeholder mapping tool.

  • Conducting of an inception meeting

  • A compendium of identified rights-based organizations/groups in the selected countries.

  • A draft report detailing the mapped women’s rights organizations and groups highlighting their capacity gaps.

  • Power Point Presentation of the draft report.

    Scope of Work

    The activity will be conducted in six countries with the GHoA, targeting formal and informal women and girls’ organizations in each country who are engaged or willing to engage in movement building and resistance of anti-gender theory. The activity will map 10 women’s rights-based organizations/group in each country for future project engagement.

    Required Experience and Skills for the Consultancy

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the socio-economic and political dynamic of women’s agency, advocacy, and diversity in the GHoA.

  • Proven experience of working with organized women groups, civil society in the GHoA and issues relating to diversity and inclusion.

  • Ability to facilitate cross-regional and in-depth interviews with various women groups using innovative and interactive online approaches.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to communicate and work with people from diverse backgrounds.

  • Strong analytical skills and critical thinking.

  • University degree in gender, human rights, social studies, or any other relevant field.

  • More than 5 years of professional experience in gender advocacy, research, and assessment.
