Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) is an independent, international research institute founded in 1989.



Its mission is to support decision-making and induce change towards sustainable
development around the world by providing integrative knowledge that bridges science and policy in the field of environment and development.

SEI has seven centres located the United Kingdom (SEI-York and SEI-Oxford), the United States (SEI-USA in Boston with sub-units in Seattle and locations in California), South America (Bogota), in Estonia (SEI Tallinn Centre), in Bangkok, Thailand (SEI’s Asia Centre) and in Nairobi, Kenya (SEI’s Africa Centre).

SEI headquarters are located centrally in Stockholm, Sweden, where we also have the Stockholm Centre with approximately 60 staff members.


SEI Africa is hosted by the World Agroforestry Centre (also known as the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry or ICRAF), an independent research institution which generates sciencebased
knowledge about the complex role trees play in agricultural landscapes and rural livelihoods.


The Centre’s headquarters are in Nairobi, Kenya.


Identify and implement research projects aligned with SEI’s mission, overall strategy and mandate.

  • Ensures high quality research publications, in accordance to SEI policies and procedures.
  • Supervise early career research staff involved in projects in the Urbanisation Programme”
  • Project management for the sustainable urbanization projects which includes managing the budgets to implement research works as assigned.
  • Prepare research/project reports/outputs according to SEI policies and procedures as well as project agreements.
  • Undertake sustainable urban development research projects that reflect SEI’s mandate.
  • Lead resource and financial mobilisation for research projects under the Urbanisation
    Programme.
  • Foster good relations with partners and local authorities, including policy makers, and local communities.


    Duties and Responsibilities: -


    Research

  • Develop, lead and implement sustainable urban development research projects that further the aims and objectives of SEI, in particular, contributing to the SEI Initiative on Urban Development Impacts on Health and Sustainability and the Centre’s Urbanisation Programme,
  • Ensure high quality research process that will lead to high quality research publications and other information for various media,
  • Identify funding sources, lead or contribute to fundraising, and seek to secure funding for these projects.

    Centre development

  • Provide guidance to early career research staff in research process and career development and contribute to SEI’s staff development program.
  • In collaboration with the Centre Communications Coordinator and the SEI

    Communications

  • Team, facilitate and support communications and outreach activities including e.g. presentations, speeches, dialogues and media articles.
  • Contribute to strengthening the relationship between Africa Centre with the host institute (ICRAF) and other stakeholders on the continent through joint research, policy engagement and capacity development activities.

    Others

  • Promote the aims and objectives of the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) as set out in its Mission and in conformation with the strategic plan.
  • Implement the projects and/or research work according to the work plans and available
    budget, cooperate with and support the colleagues in the research team to ensure the on-time delivery and quality of outputs, and report progress
    in accordance with the SEI Project Manual including filling in your timesheets correctly.
  • Be a proactive team member, cooperating with and supporting colleagues in your research
    group and/or collaborating with other groups within the Centre; participate in the crossing centre communications.
  • Ensure exchange of ideas with relevant institutes, scientists and experts including other SEI Centres.
  • Respect and implement all the Institute policies, including the Institute Code of Conduct, environment policy and the institute secondment policy if the position is filled in through SEI internal secondment.


    Requirements: -


  • Ph.D. and 3-5years working experience, related primarily to urban studies, sustainability and inclusive development, preferably applied research that links with policy engagement and/or influences policy action and decision-making.
  • Research background in urban change, urban sustainability and urban governance in the
    African context, with a strong publication record in refereed journals and non-refereed
    publications.
  • Experience in project/research design, implementation and management.
  • Experience and background in data processing and analysis using quantitative and
    qualitative methods, or mixed methods approaches.
  • Proven experience in fundraising and writing of research grant proposals.
  • Experience living and working in the Africa region and ability to speak at least one African language, notably through engagement in a variety of public forums: conferences,
    workshops, dialogues, roundtable discussions, gender mainstreaming and capacity building
    projects in international research institutions.
  • Experience in communicating scientific information to a range of different audiences.
  • Expertise in GIS, spatial analysis, statistics and/or modelling.


    Required skills: -

  • Fluency in spoken and written English, with ability to communicating research to different
    audiences.
  • Strong motivation, personal initiative and commitment to excellence and results, as well as enthusiasm for doing scientific research.
  • Demonstrated record of interdisciplinary collaboration, partnership and team building and the desire to work in a collaborative environment.
  • Interests in working at the interface of social science and policy engagement, and qualitative approaches.
  • Knowledge of an African language and culture.

    will be for an initial period three -years renewable and subject to a Six (6) months’ probation period.
