St. Lawrence University Assistant Director for Student Life and Academic Instruction Kenya Semester Program Jobs in Kenya


Introduction

St. Lawrence University has for the past forty-three years operated a study abroad program in Kenya for up to 25 U.S. students each semester. The program operates out of a five acre campus in the Karen neighborhood of Nairobi and integrates classroom instruction with extended field components and internships throughout East Africa. The program’s immersive pedagogy focuses on the historic and contemporary intersection of issues related to East African culture, environment and development. Students study diverse topics such as biodiversity conservation, development, gender, history, health, and politics.

Responsibilities

  • The assistant director will be in charge of all aspects related to Student Life, health, and safety; and will co-teach the core course:
  • “Culture, Environment, and Development in East Africa” with the academic director.
  • Additionally, this person will have responsibility for the rural and urban homestay components as well as the Independent Study components of the core course during the last month of each semester.
  • He/she will share advising responsibilities to students about academic and cross-cultural concerns with the two other directors.
  • The program administration must work together closely; a highly collaborative work style is essential.
  • As a member of the St. Lawrence faculty, he/she is also eligible for regular support for ongoing professional development.

    Qualifications

  • Applicants for this post must have a master degree in-hand and demonstrated success in teaching at the university level;
  • Extensive knowledge of Kenya’s socio-economic and political landscape, international education, and with the liberal arts pedagogy of the U.S. university system.
  • Master degree or Ph.D. should be in a social science or humanities field, with demonstrated research expertise in East Africa, and a native or near native fluency in Swahili.
  • The assistant director must be an enthusiastic and energetic teacher. He or she will accompany students on several lengthy field components, requiring absence from Nairobi for substantial intervals.
  • Ph.D. is preferred; prefer experience in field-based learning and in cross-cultural education.
