    Our client is a Non- governmental organization in operation for over 5 years in Kenya.

    They seek to hire a special needs teacher at their school based in Maai Mahiu.

    Responsibilities

  • Carry out assessments of children who have long or short-term learning difficulties and work with colleagues to identify individual child’s special needs.
  • Develop an Individualized Educational Program (IEP) for every child together with his/her respective parent/guardian and other team members, designed to promote the child’s educational, physical, and social/emotional development.
  • Develop and adapt conventional teaching methods to meet individual needs of every child, including intensive individualized instruction, problem-solving assignments, and small-group work with an overall aim of supporting learning; employing techniques in an overall positive behavioral support system using a variety of techniques such as phonetics, multi-sensory learning, and repetition to reinforce learning and to meet students’ varying needs and interests.
    Use special equipment and materials adapting them to stimulate special needs children’s interest in learning.
  • Collaborate with other team members to define appropriate activities for the special needs children in relation to the curriculum.
  • Liaise with other professionals such as O.Ts, Speech language pathologists, physiotherapists etc. in working with and supporting learners with special needs.
  • Organize learning outside the classroom in activities such as home/community visits, school outings and sporting events for special needs children.
  • Carry out administrative work as required, including updating and maintaining records on pupils’ progress and individual plan of activities and goals accomplished.
  • Develop transition plans outlining specific steps to prepare specific learners for integration into regular schooling or vocational training.
  • Design and teach appropriate curricula and inform parents of their kids’ progress.
  • Teach socially acceptable behavior, as determined by the students’ individualized education plan.
  • Serve as a member of a multidisciplinary team as appropriate.
  • Develop plans for effective communication, monitoring, and follow-up of all special needs children in the program.
  • Employ special educational strategies and techniques during instruction to improve the development of sensory- and
    perceptual-motor skills, language, cognition, and memory.
  • Liaising with the other team members, establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects.
  • Meet with parents/guardians to discuss their children’s progress and to determine priorities for their children and their individualized educational needs.
  • Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining an environment conducive to learning for all learners.
  • Do school visits to monitor the progress of integrated children from our program and identify other special needs children.

    Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Special needs Education or Diploma from an approved training institution.
  • At least 1 years professional supporting and teaching children with special needs.
  • Additional relevant training such as sign language and use of braille will be an added advantage.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of children developmental sequence and skills.
  • Excellent knowledge on current Special Needs Education policy framework in Kenya and children rights as provided for in the Kenya Children’s Act.
  • Demonstrated flexibility, adaptability and openness to new ideas in educational practices, particularly relating to Special needs Education.
  • Excellent client service skills and the ability to create partnerships with families
  • Proven strength in verbal and written communication and organizational skills
