Who we are

SOS Children’s Villages Ethiopia is an International Non-governmental organization and a member of SOS Children’s Villages International Federation.

The organization started its humanitarian work with the opening of its first Village in Mekelle, Northern part of Ethiopia in 1974.

The organization has been providing life-saving provisions such as food, water and health services for a very significant number of children devastated by severe drought and the subsequent famine.

Today, we have grown significantly to meet the persistent challenges that confront Ethiopian children who have lost parental care and are at risk of losing their parental care.

Working in close collaboration with international donors, local government and community based organizations across seven program locations; SOS Children’s Villages Ethiopia aspires that every child should grow up with love, respect and security.

We are looking for a WASH Coordinator that will manage and coordinate water related construction projects as well as sanitation facilities to help support access to better living conditions and livelihood opportunities at our Emergency Response and Recovery Project.

Your role....

As a WASH Coordinator, you will be in charge of the following:

  • Supervising water constructions and environmental health issues in compliance with the government and WASH cluster requirements.
  • Ensuring that all water construction activities are being carried out as per the specifications
  • Guiding technical process at field level in compliance with the Operational Manual
  • Overseeing direct project support to communities and institutions during planning, designing, implementation, and operation/maintenance stages
  • Conducting systematic, comprehensive technical proposal review
  • Assisting with formation of simple, sustainable operation and maintenance plans and procedures
  • Overseeing project monitoring in close coordination with non-technical management, communities, and local government to ensure overall quality control and compliance with WASH cluster
    requirements.
  • Supervising community payment approvals of cash-for –work programme. Regularly through on spot monitoring.
  • Fostering cooperative professional relationships between communities, technical experts, project officers and service providers.
  • Assisting projects in on-going assessment of existing water sources in the Somali regional state in collaboration with Regional stakeholders.
  • Conducting water quality assessments and disinfecting sources as required.
  • Coordinating detailed hydrological and environmental assessments in order to map areas requiring new water sources.
  • Arranging and coordinating meetings with WASH community leaders in collaboration with the Woreda stakeholders.
  • Preparing TOR and delivering water management training to community water committees, plumbers, Electricians and other WASH project staff.
  • Investigating alternative sources of water (infiltration wells, hand-augured wells, gravity fed supply, stream diversions, rainwater catchment, Spring development Dew condensation etc.) within targeted project sites.
  • Mobilizing communities to raise funds for and participate in design of water supply project.
  • Overseeing any future water implementation project using community participation and mainstream Gender and SOS Principles.
  • Preparing and writing monthly and quarterly, annual activity reports, best practices
  • Performing other similar duties as assigned by the Zonal emergency response coordinator

    The must haves:

  • BSc Degree in Water resource, Hydraulics, Irrigation/,Rural Water supply and Environmental engineering from recognized University
  • Minimum of 5 years professional experience
  • Fluent in English and Somali language
  • Understanding of child development issues, including knowledge of child rights, child protection, child welfare, childcare and parenting; and relevant local and national laws, regulations and protocols.
  • Good analytical, Problem solving and reporting skills,
  • Collaboration skills,
  • Experience in community mobilization;
  • Experience in managing emergency water tracking projects in the region
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Operational knowledge of Microsoft Office software, AutoCAD, Archi CAD, GIS and Water Cad, Epanet

    The pluses:

  • Experience working with International NGO's
  • Prior experience working in community-based participatory development projects
