Solidarités International Program Coordinator Jobs in South Sudan

The conflict between Northern and Southern Sudan is known as the longest war in Africa. Six and half years after the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in Nairobi in January 2005, South Sudan became the youngest country in the World on July 9th 2011, after a referendum.

In 2013, South Sudan plunged into warfare two years after its independence from Sudan as a political dispute between President Kiir and then vice-president Riek Machar erupted into armed conflict.

A peace agreement was signed in Ethiopia in August 2015 but fell apart a year later after clashes broke out between government forces and rebels.

In August 2018, another peace agreement was reached between President Salva Kiir and main rebel groups, reinstating Machar as Vice President. Sustainability of the agreement will be critical for the future of the country.

Up to 300,000 (even more) people are estimated to have been killed in the war. More than 4 million people have been displaced in a country of 12 million, with about 2 million internally displaced and about 2.1 million having fled to neighboring countries (Kenya, Sudan, Uganda, DRC…). Almost 7.1 million people are food insecure in the country.
