Job Description

SNV, Netherlands Development Organization, is Dutch-based, non for profit foreign charity operating in Ethiopia since the 1970s.

Currently, SNV is working in the eight+ regional states of Ethiopia which include– Addis Ababa, Afar, Somali, Gambella, Benishangul, SNNPR, Oromia, Amhara and Tigray regional states, providing technical assistance and program implementation in the major 3 sectors including Agriculture, WASH, and Energy.

SNV is an open and learning organization focusses on improving the lives of Ethiopian Need people through best practices in value chain, market, and youth and gender.

Through its work in the three sectors, SNV in Ethiopia supports the development of a number of value chains and commodities to improve the Livelihoods.

This takes a value chain and market development approach, with special focus on improving access to sustainable markets for smallholder farmers, youths, urban development and by developing business-to-business relations and improving business development services.

Project Background

Horti-LIFE project is funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (EKN) and implemented by SNV-Ethiopia in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture.

The aim is to increase the productivity and food safety in the horticultural sector by supporting smallholder farmers, rural SMEs and supporting institutions. This second phase of the project duration is starting from 2019 up to 2023.

SNV Ethiopia is looking for dynamic, experienced, talented, energetic, flexible, open and ready to learn candidates for the position of Senior Gender Advisor for Horti-LIFE II Project

The Role

The successful appointee will have access to start-up resources and some ongoing support and will be encouraged
to apply for his/her own skills, knowledge and experience.

This position is fully responsible for leading the work on gender across all project components and ensure that women benefit equally from project interventions; Update the gender analysis of the project by reviewing the experiences of Horti-LIFE I (gender study, Gender Action Plan, gender training) and via the gender component of the scoping study that will generate some more in-depth insights on gender in horticulture.

Job Requirements

The Person

  • Applicants should possess the following Educational, Experience qualifications and requirements

    Education

  • An MSc degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field (agriculture, rural sociology, anthropology, gender, etc.) or a BSc with a very solid field experience

    Experience

  • A minimum of 10 years of work experience on gender in agriculture

  • Solid knowledge of gender issues in rural Ethiopia especially in extension, education, and micro-finance

  • A strong focus on practical gender interventions (work on policy issues and/or work on general gender values and norms is less relevant)

  • Broad experience in gender: covering work with households, informal groups (like FFSs) and institutions (extension service and A-TVETs and universities)
