Project

SNV is leading the implementation of the DFID-funded Sustainable Sanitation and Hygiene for All (SSH4A) Results Program implemented in nine sub-Saharan African countries including Ethiopia.

The SSH4A approach in Ethiopia has been implemented by SNV Ethiopia in 6 rural woredas of Waghimra zone since April 2014 to March 2018 and is also being implemented in Estie Woreda of South Gondar Zone in Amhara Region from January 2017 to March 2020 as an extension of the existing project.

SNV’s rural sanitation approach, Sustainable Sanitation and Hygiene for All, is a four-pillared integrated approach that helps create sanitation demand, develop sanitation supply chains, promotes the embedding of positive sanitation and hygiene behaviours (through behaviour change communication activities), and strengthens overall governance to aid governments in performing their role as duty bearers of the right to safe water and sanitation.

In the countries where we work in, our rural sanitation approach is being applied in partnership with governments, and often, as part of their (sanitation) development frameworks.

Development contributions of SSH4A RP are measured along three key outcomes. These are:

  • households access to a toilet;

  • households
    hygienic use and maintenance of a toilet; and

  • households access to a handwashing with soap (HWWS) in/near a toilet.
