Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree in laws (llb). Post graduate diploma in law and an active advocate of the high court of kenya.

    Experience:

  • At least 5 years relevant working experience in a busy company. Those with experience in insurance industry will have an added advantage.

    Salary: kshs. 250,000 - 350,000 plus company benefits

    Additional Attributes:

    Group legal and compliance officer will be incharge of legal and compliance department. He/she will advice the management in regards to risk and control within the organization by performing the following duties:

  • Monitor legal priorities and compliance procedures for the business to ensure an internal environment in which the business understands and meets its legal obligations.

  • Monitor and advise on the business’ compliance with legislation and conduct appropriate training programmes across all functions.

  • Provide a professional legal service of advice and assistance to management and functions of the company.

  • Understand the internal control infrastructure and potential internal control weaknesses within the business and ensure corrective actions are properly and timely executed.

  • Produce and communicate control environment progress to senior management.

  • Based on the external and internal audit results, identify and highlight to management the potential processes for streamlining to achieve transparency and control efficiencies within the business.

  • Perform pre-audit preparation when necessary to evaluate the control effectiveness of the business processes, discuss the audit results and follow up on the management action plans.

  • Monitor the process and structure changes within the organization and assess its implications on the control environment.

  • Advise management with the appropriate remediation to sustain the control environment and reduce the business risk exposure.

  • Provide the business with guidance around the implementation of new processes to ensure that controls and compliance aspects are being considered (processes improvement management) develop delegation of authority and monitor any deviations.

  • Ensure keeping doa up-to-date and relevant reflecting the business and operating structures needs.

  • Drive the doa compliance throughout the organization and raise awareness.

  • Develop means and methods within the organization to promote and monitor the
    compliance aspects to group/local governance rules and requirements and company policies and procedures.

  • Develop a collaborative relationship with the senior management as a centre on excellence for controls and risk management.

  • Actively support management in group governance framework (e.G. Control navigator, internal control signoff, sobc, etc).

  • Work closely with management in promoting and embedding the company risk management guidelines and support the production of robust business risks templates.

  • Ensure all employees understand the legal requirements and standards of the company and support their compliance with those requirements and standards.

  • Contribute to cross functional projects and initiatives to assess, monitor and anticipate potential threats to the business such as competitors' activities, systems/structures failures etc.

  • To support the achievement of business objectives.

  • Powerful and effective communication to the organization on the relevance and strategic business importance of the area of responsibility of this role.

  • Develops own technical and managerial skills as identified and agreed in personal development plan.

  • Understands company vision and values and seeks to incorporate them into new developments and initiatives.

  • Develop and optimise internal networks to ensure that the needs of the client are fully understood.

  • Enhance the current network within the legal community in order to enhance knowledge sharing about managing all current and upcoming business critical legislation challenges.

  • To identify and take steps in conjunction with management to minimise commercial risk.

  • To keep abreast of developments in the law and to advise functions of the legal impact when appropriate.
