Purpose of Interactive/Participatory Radio Program

  • In order to achieve Objective/pillar 1 (strengthening of human capital and social cohesion), participatory theatre will be conducted. Participatory theatre has long been a proven tool used by Search along with the communities to collectively reflect and critically analyze their own situation, develop, and perform artistic and cultural content that reenacts their reality, and actively engage participants in dialogue, analysis, planning, and action towards positive social transformation.

  • Participatory theatre is also a means of mitigating conflicts and mostly focuses on the impact violence and involvement in armed groups.

  • These performances will trigger discussion around social cohesion and knowledge of approaches to build social cohesion in society and raise awareness on the deep trauma that results from being displaced.

  • The purpose of the consultancy is to use theatre to depict, directly address and stimulate action of tensions between different groups (ethnic, religious, Internally Displaced Persons and members of Host community) Gongolun, Fariya, Kirbiri, Kolori, Sabon Bolori, Kolori Futlatari and Shuwari Lamb communities of Jere LGA of Borno state and produce high quality video content which tell a clear story suitable for publishing and distribution by SFCG..

    Specific objectives of the consultancy

    ▪ To develop and perform emotionally powerful stories/content that engages audiences and heightens the awareness to promote a shift in audiences’ attitude towards a strengthened intergroup relations and social cohesion amongst the different groups within communities.

    ▪ Increase the understanding of the community members on issues that heighten tensions between them in the community.

    Methodology

  • This radio participatory Theatre will focus on building social cohesion through a pre-recorded radio drama followed by a live phone-in program.

  • The program will be made up an hour long 24 episodes, in which a pre-recorded drama will be presented followed by a live interactive session where the drama troupes will engage listeners to participate, reflect and proffer solutions to the issues presented.

  • The radio theatre performances will highlight compelling conflicts from the audiences’ daily lives, and the discussion in each episode will end with a choice left to be made by the participants who will be engaged in problem-solving around issues that affect them. The program will be produced in Kanuri and aired weekly.

  • The topics addressed by the program will reinforce messaging from the various components of the RESILAC project with a focus on promoting social cohesion across the many dividing lines present in territories of the Lake Chad Basin – ethnicity/tribe, religion, displacement status, affiliation with formal and informal armed groups, and others.

  • Other relevant topics such as promoting mental health awareness, youth and women’s empowerment, and good governance will also be integrated into the storyline of the program.

    Deliverables

  • Conduct 26 episodes of a live interactive radio Participatory Theatre shows in Hausa and Kanuri languages

  • Conduct research on topics provided by search’s media coordinator based on the thematic areas of the project

  • Develop scripts based on the stories/content created in English and Kanuri languages and submit to Search’s media coordinator prior to the commencement of the shows

  • Produce a 5-7 minutes radio drama containing the key messages from the information gathered for each episodes after the scripts have been approved

  • Engage listeners in a live interactive session following the drama segment

  • Manage and coordinate listeners calling in to participate to ensure a hitch free interaction

  • Support debrief and reflection of each show to identify lessons and recommendations for improving subsequent shows

  • Review script in line with emerging issues from ongoing community scoping and post-performance reflection meetings and pitch to Search’s media coordinator for agreement

  • Attend meetings/trainings organized
    by Search for Common Ground, which have direct bearing to the program and production of it

  • Ensure that weekly reports including the outcome of reflection meetings and feedback received from listeners at the end of each show are recorded and transmitted to search via the Media Coordinator

    Qualification Required

  • At least 8 years’ experience developing and implementing community theater

  • A professional, experienced and already established theatrical group with expertise in popular theatre with experience engaging and working with audiences from diverse ethnic and religious background;

  • The theatrical group must have an already existing pool of artists and personnel including costumier, make up, stage manager, script-writer and director.

  • Demonstrated experience working on conflict issues and fragile environments;

  • Excellent knowledge of the Middle Belt conflict dynamics

  • Relevant experience supporting and engaging the media, NGO or INGO

  • Familiarity with location (i.e. Borno State) and knowledge of the local languages in the target states will be an added advantage (in this case Hausa).

  • The group must have within their pool personnel with experience in script and concept development, stage performance and directing.

  • Experience in conducting community participatory theatre performances.

    Interested applicants must submit the following:


  • A technical proposal, no more than four pages, describing how the participatory objectives will be met within the stated timetable. Also a narrative “pitch” describing the basic stage play concepts and illustrative examples of how they would be structured.

  • Technical qualifications of the team members including CVs, for all proposed personnel along with select internet links or digital copies of relevant theatre work developed by team members.

  • Budget/financial proposal including a description of costs for personnel, per diems, travel, logistics, any local production company support, and all production costs (development, pre-production, production, and post-production). Including an overall cost for the contract. Final content decisions will be discussed between the contractor and Search before the stage plays begin.

  • Creative portfolios, including internet links or digital copies of relevant works developed by the organization.

  • Submitted offers will be reviewed on an ongoing basis and selection made according to the following criteria:

  • Quality of the financial offer: realism of the proposed costs, adequacy between the budget and the technical offer;

  • Consultant's expertise and experience to conduct the participatory theatre ;

  • Quality of technical proposal and portfolios provided by consultant
