Role purpose:

The Senior Health and Nutrition Officer will represent SC values and principles in interactions with staff and external audiences.

These values and principles include commitment to the mission of Save the Children international, team orientation, quality management and leadership development, introducing systems and procedures to strengthen staff motivation and productivity.

The incumbent is expected to oversee the implementation of health & nutrition activities and establish an effective coordination mechanism among the consortium members.

The post holder will be responsible for implementation, conduct training, monitoring and review of health and nutrition components of the emergency Nutrition response.

S/he will be expected to work closely with the target communities; the project team particularly health and nutrition, sub-office and respective operational district and regional level stakeholders.

S/he will be responsible for the timely implementation of the health and nutrition activities as per the approved project document; and government and donor requirements and Save the Children standards.

Key areas of accountability:

  • Engage in the planning and achievements of the health and nutrition activities of the project and ensuring that the quality standards and state of the art are met;
  • Ensure effective start up, management, implementation, monitoring, timely submission of quality reports;
  • Provide joint support and guidance to team members and woreda health offices for quality implementation of nutrition and Health activities.
  • Ensure coordination and multi-sectoral approaches is met for holistic approaches
  • The post holder is expected to assess training needs, plan & provides assistance in trainings for staff while setting up new OTP and SC sites and ICCM services; assist training facilitations (preparation of training materials and kits) for health professionals in Community based Management Acute Malnutrition, ICCM and IYCF, MIYCN, Dietary diversification
  • Extensive experience for nutrition sensitive and Nutrition specific areas.
  • Excellent Behavioral change communication; innovation of new/adopt IEC materials which are appropriate for the project design.
  • Participating in and/or leading health, nutrition, and/or multi-sectoral assessments as required;
  • Conducts regular field visits to provide close supervision to implementing partners;
  • Work with the project team for the development of work plans, POPs, budgets, and other required program documents for the health and nutrition components of the project;
  • Organizes monthly progress report to donors and government/ENCU.
  • Health and Nutrition Woreda Coordinator and provides updates when needed;
  • Provides a daily/weekly/and monthly over view of drug items, RUTF, Therapeutic milk ration stocks supplied to beneficiaries;
  • Manages the stock levels of therapeutic products, drugs and all other materials and alert the Concerned bodies in a timely manner as more materials are required;
  • Facilitate and conduct regular field supports and routine review meetings with government technical persons and officials to monitor the implementation of health and nutrition components of the project;
  • Performs other related tasks as required
    Reporting
  • Ensure monthly reporting systems are implemented in the satellite office.

    Child safeguarding (CSG)

  • Conduct activities in accordance with the rules of the Child Safeguarding Policy, which includes reporting suspicions of child abuse,

  • Ensure that all activities seen through a child safeguarding lens;

  • Be vigilant about observing possible child abuse/harm,

  • Ensure all partners and beneficiaries of Save the Children are
    aware of the child safeguarding policy and promote the message of child safeguarding to children, beneficiary families, and community members in general,

  • Conduct project risk assessment using given template and mitigation plans are addressed Report performance of child safeguarding activities per quarter,

    ob Requirements

  • Post-graduate/ Bsc degree in public health/nutrition preferred or Bachelor in Health related field.
  • Minimum 5 years’ field experience in Developmental and humanitarian in pastoral context, including significant experience in resilience and multi-sectoral projects.
  • Excellent leadership, coordination and management experience.
  • Knowledge of latest health related technical guidelines and standards in emergency nutrition and health.
  • Experience in quality assurance in a clinical setting desirable;
  • Demonstrated experience in supporting, organizing and facilitating trainings;
  • Experience and up-to-date knowledge in the technical areas of implementing MNCH, CMAM and ICCM particularly in pastoral context preferably Somali pastoral areas;
  • Substantial experience at lower levels including community in coordinating, mobilizing community, planning, implementation, supervision, monitoring and reporting;
  • Demonstrated work experience in implementing integrated health and nutrition interventions in a complex and demanding workload;
  • Ability and willingness to travel and work in rural areas where the project is implemented, within approved security frameworks;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, communication, presentation and facilitation skills and an ability to train and mentor staff;
  • Experience in budget management if required.
  • Demonstrated ability for leadership and independent decision making
  • Strong interpersonal skills & excellent team player.
  • Willingness and ability to work in hardship environment.
  • Cultural and gender sensitivity
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
    Knowledge of the local culture and Language is Advantageous
