  • The Senior Food Security and Livelihoods Technical Advisor will use their in-depth contextual understanding, technical expertise, and relationship building skills to define and deliver our strategic ambition and direction for Food Security and Livelihoods.

  • In addition, the Advisor will play a critical role in growing the funding portfolio for FSL, including supporting Country Offices in identifying and positioning for key opportunities and developing proposals to ensure resilient food systems and improved economic outcomes for vulnerable households.

  • The Advisor will also provide technical assistance and capacity building to their Country Office counterparts to ensure the implementation of high quality and high impact FSL programmes, and supports the generation of evidence to demonstrate impact and sharing learning across our programmes, teams and partners.

  • This role includes representing Save the Children in internal and external fora and contributing to thought leadership on priority issues including nutrition-sensitive programming, financial inclusion, market-based programming, youth and women economic empowerment, Household Economy Approach (HEA), and economic resilience building.

    In order to be successful, you will bring/have:

    Essential

  • Masters degree in in a relevant social science, natural science, agricultural economics, economics, development studies or equivalent experience.

    Experience & Skills

  • At least 7 years' experience of leading the design and implementation of humanitarian and development programmes in the field of food security and livelihoods, preferably in countries in the East and Southern Africa region

  • In-depth technical expertise in at least one of the following areas of work: food production (agriculture- crops/livestock - and fisheries/ aquaculture), natural resource management and climate change, inclusive market systems development and private sector engagement, financial inclusion, household economic resilience /strengthening particularly in non farm/off-farm alternative livelihoods.

  • Experience working on one or more of the following cross cutting issues: Migration and rural-urban linkages in food security; gender-sensitive programming/women's economic empowerment; youth livelihoods particularly in the context of rural economies; integrated multi-sectoral programming, especially nutrition-sensitive programming; and/or nexus programs straddling humanitarian and development needs.

  • Proven familiarity and success in business development/fundraising with one or more of the
    major donors for FSL funding including: FCDO, European Commission, USAID/Bureau for Resilience and Food Security, USAID Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (formerly the Offices of Food for Peace and Foreign Disaster Assistance), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food For Progress.

  • Experience of context and policy analysis, and influencing and advocacy at regional/ international level in order to hold duty bearers to account to realise children's rights (e.g. Food Security/Nutrition assessments, Household Economy Analysis, market assessment (PCMA, EMMA), labour market assessments, market system/value chain analysis, gender analysis, Cost of the Diet, cost barrier analysis, Hazard Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment - non-exhaustive list)

  • Demonstrated experience of strategy development and planning, program design, monitoring and evaluation skills, including designing pathways to sustainable impact at scale, and able to generate and use data and evidence to innovate, deliver, learn and share what works and what doesn't work for children.

  • Skilled at networking, representation and partnership development in order promote learning, strengthen civil society and mobilise resources.

  • Experience of supporting humanitarian preparedness, response and recovery.

  • Significant experience in training, capacity building, and mentoring.

  • Fluent in English and high level of English writing skills.

  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally up to 25% time.
