Title:
  • Communications and Advocacy Coordinator- Humanitarian

    Role Purpose:

    The Emergency Communications and Advocacy Coordinator is responsible for leading internal and external communications during major humanitarian emergencies.

    The responsibilities also include brand protection and reputation management, international media relations and advocacy.

    It is envisaged that the post holder will work full time on the emergencies element of the brief when a major emergency response is in progress, while the normal balance of the job will be approximately one third emergency communications and two-thirds advocacy.

    Key Areas of Accountability

    Programme Support

  • Develop a communications plan and produce communications materials to be used by Save the children both internally and externally.
  • Responsible for meeting the information and communication needs of Save the Children through collection, analysis, and dissemination of strong information and communication products.
  • Be the focal person to host media trips or external content gathering trips related to humanitarian work under the guidance of Communications Manager.
  • Ensure informed consent is captured in all media and content gathering engagements.
  • Serve as primary focal point for humanitarian input to support the development and implementation of campaign strategies in humanitarian responses.
  • Develop training materials and mentor staff to increase their expertise and confidence in humanitarian advocacy and communications.
  • With guidance of Communications Manager, develop and maintain a proactive relationship with key media outlets and individuals.
  • Draft and otherwise support the production of advocacy products as outlined in the Kenya advocacy strategy for use at the regional and international levels.
  • Ensure that all advocacy messages, documents and strategies are evidence-based, drawn from field experience and assessments, of high quality and effective.
  • Ensure Save the Children emergency response strategies have clear advocacy objectives and strategies.
  • Comply with Save the Children policies and practice with respect to child safeguarding, code of conduct, health and safety, equal opportunities and other relevant policies and procedures.

    Qualifications and Experience

    Essential

  • Degree in relevant field such as Mass/media Communication / International relations / Journalism.
  • Five Years working experience in humanitarian communications and advocacy.
  • Strong understanding of approaches for communicating information to a wide range of audiences including media relations.
  • Proven experience in communications mapping, planning team deliverables ideally in a humanitarian communications/advocacy project.
  • Understanding of key trends in the humanitarian sector and aptitude to learn.
  • Experience working in communications, social media or knowledge management
  • Strong understanding of humanitarian operations and previous experience in humanitarian response roles.
  • Outstanding communication skills (verbal and written) with a proven ability to distil complex information and materials into digestible and inspiring messages; along with the ability to take digital photos.
  • A high degree of flexibility and adaptability in order to respond to changing needs.
  • Excellent written communication skills and an understanding of how to write for an audience with English as a second language.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, a proven ability to establish and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders at all levels and across cultures.
  • Proactive approach to work and the ability to identify and implement effective processes for achieving outcomes
  • A commitment to the Save the Children values.

    Desirable
  • Language skills in English and Kiswahili.
