Job Description

Accountable to the General Manager, the Medical Director has the following duties and responsibilities;

  • Oversee Clinical Compliance

  • Makes sure that the center facility is in compliance with Addis Ababa and federal regulations.

  • Deals with the functions of approving, and updating the general institutional policy, protocols, and procedures ensures that adequate implementation of processes is achieved according to predefined standards

  • Ensures quality patient care and fiscal compliance by closely work with liaisons from local government agencies.

    Maintain Quality of Patient Care

  • Provide high-quality customer service to the diversity of patients

  • Observe patient conditions and then advocate for your patients' need and intervene and mediate in difficult situations

    Educate Medical Personnel

  • Maintains the professional development of other medical personnel at our facility through clinical practices.

  • Train and provide education to existing and new medical professionals.

  • Liaison with academic communities to keep up-to-date on medical techniques.

  • Develops and approves an applicable continuous quality improvement program, including a plan and a timetable to assess the efficiency of corrective measures

  • Creates and apply improvement procedures with measurable outcomes by devising continuous quality improvement program that allows the application of monitoring and evaluation of the activities of each medical unit and also individual staff performance assessment.

  • Engage in medical supervision and overall regulation of all medical facets that may affect the institutional healthcare system, including availability of critical care units, equipment, interdisciplinary work, and quality of nursing care.

  • Deeply involved in the regulation and implementation of respect, fairness, integrity, responsibility, mindfulness, and professionalism.

    Patient Care Audits:

  • Ensures that patient care audit is scheduled and performed to assess the quality of care and to fix any potential deficiency regarding the clinical performance regularly.

  • Ensures that Medical records are maintained and kept safely in a confidential manner

  • Medical audits are required as a rule to ensure that patient care meets the expected standards and the audits reports must be analyzed. Corrective measures are then adopted before being archived.

  • Ensures that the patient care audits must also document the availability and efficacy of physicians and Para-medical personnel in case of emergencies or critical cases

    Lead Self:

  • Be a role model with respect to personal integrity, emotional resiliency, and emotional self-awareness and regulation

  • Engage in continuing education, both formal and informal

    Engages Others:

  • Encourage and support a positive work environment to ensure positive staff morale and quality services.

  • Promote a climate and develop mechanisms which ensure constant upgrading and competency of physicians’, nurses’ and other medical staffs’ skills.

  • Mentor and coach Unit/Department Heads and other physicians in leadership roles.

  • Mentor and coach medical staff to success.

  • Encourage and support management training for physicians in leadership roles.

  • Establish and foster effective working relationships with and between the various professional groups within the hospitals.

  • Plan for and ensure appropriate utilization of medical human resources.

  • Be involved with physician and other medical staff recruitment processes.

  • Work with department heads in developing a medical staff HR plan and ensure the process for credentialing and maintenance of professional standards are established and followed.

  • Ensure medical staff is compliant with medical staff bylaws, rules and regulations.

  • Assist the Department Heads in the performance appraisal
    process for members of the medical staff.

  • Acts as primary spokesperson for medical matters to the community and media and other concerned third parties.

    Achieve Results:

  • Establish, as part of the management team, priorities, strategies and action plans to achieve stated outcomes, goals and objectives.

  • Monitor progress toward the achievement of stated objectives.

  • Implement policies and practices consistent with corporate objectives.

  • Advise medical staff on new and current Company and Government policies, strategic directions, rules, regulations etc and promote compliance with such.

  • Recommend policies and guidelines relating to medical/clinical matters consistent with medical staff bylaws, rules and regulations.

  • Assist clinical department heads and committee chairs in setting and obtaining objectives for the improvement of the quality of medical care and resource utilization.

  • Work closely with medical staff to establish an accountability framework for physicians and Nurses that addresses ethical, legal and fiscal responsibilities.

  • Provide advice to the General Manager on medical/clinical matters.

    Quality Improvement and Monitoring:

  • Ensure performance and quality data are collected and maintained to support utilization initiatives.

  • Ensure effective processes and mechanisms are in place to encourage best practice to improve clinical outcomes and quality.

  • Function as a strong advocate for sound medical and clinical practice.

  • Ensure the development and monitoring of patient outcomes.

  • Monitor and incorporate into action plans patient and patient -family feedback.

  • Participate as a member of chair of various quality committees, Ethics panel and as required.

  • Conduct and ensure processes are in place for medical risk management and that they are functioning properly.

    Leadership

  • Promote the development, implementation and coordination of patient-focused programming.

  • Develop and support clinical department heads in managing their departments.

  • Mobilize physician involvement in decision-making and commitment toward implementing organizational goals.

  • Promote continuity of care by facilitating patient flow between levels of care and facilities.

  • Chairs the Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) and acts as liaison between Administration, MAC and Medical Staff.

  • Attends medical staff meetings to facilitate open channels of communication and aid in issue resolution.

    Systems Transformation:

  • Use systems/critical thinking skills to understand pressing issues pertaining to the Countries health care system.

  • Encourage and support innovation, using evidence based approaches applied in a health context.

  • Be aware of trends, issues and values that are shaping the future.

  • Champion and help orchestrate necessary change.

  • Use change management skills to help medical staff and others navigate through the changing health care environment

  • Summary of the different subsets of traits belonging to the Medical Director role from the point of views of behavioral and Ethical, Medical and Scientific and Administrative and managerial.
