Safaricom Kenya Senior Data Architect Jobs
Job Summary
Design, govern and evolve the enterprise data architecture across M-PESA Africa's multi-market ecosystem.
Provide strategic direction for data management, governance, analytics and AI enablement across mobile money, payments infrastructure and digital platforms.
Serve as a senior technical leader, translating complex data challenges into scalable architectural solutions while influencing engineering, product, compliance and executive stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Data Architecture and Strategy
Own enterprise data architecture across transactional, operational, analytical and AI/ML data domains.
Define and enforce data modelling standards, data flow patterns and integration architectures for real-time and batch-processing environments.
Design data platforms supporting payment systems, API analytics, fraud detection, AML monitoring and regulatory reporting.
Drive adoption of modern architectures including Data Mesh, Data Lakehouse and event-driven platforms aligned with cloud and hybrid infrastructure strategies.
Data Governance and Standards
Establish and champion enterprise-wide data governance frameworks and data quality standards across multiple markets.
Define data classification, lineage and cataloguing standards to ensure end-to-end data traceability.
Partner with Compliance, Legal and Market teams to ensure adherence to regulatory obligations and data sovereignty requirements.
Integration and Platform Architecture
Architect data integration patterns between core M-PESA systems, third-party platforms and analytics environments.
Collaborate with API gateway teams to define event-driven and API-first data exchange patterns.
Design and govern streaming and Change Data Capture (CDC) architectures using technologies such as Apache Kafka and Oracle GoldenGate.
AI and Analytics Enablement
Design data architectures supporting AI and machine learning use cases including transaction monitoring, fraud detection, customer intelligence and predictive analytics.
Define feature store architecture, data pipeline standards and model-serving infrastructure patterns.
Support evaluation and onboarding of vector databases, embedding pipelines and LLM-ready data platforms.
Leadership and Stakeholder Engagement
Represent data architecture in Architecture Review Boards, design forums and governance committees.
Mentor and coach data engineers and architects across multiple markets.
Produce executive-ready architecture documentation, including C4 diagrams, Mermaid diagrams, Architecture Decision Records
(ADRs) and strategic presentations.
Lead vendor evaluations for data platforms, governance technologies and cloud-based data services.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Electrical/Computer Engineering or a related field.
Experience
Experience in Data Architecture, Data Engineering or related technical disciplines, with at least three (3) years in a senior or leadership capacity.
Proven experience designing enterprise-scale data platforms within financial services, fintech or telecommunications environments.
Deep expertise in conceptual, logical and physical data modelling for both OLTP and OLAP environments.
Hands-on experience with cloud data platforms such as AWS, Azure or Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
Experience with big data technologies including Spark, Databricks, BigQuery, Redshift or similar platforms.
Strong experience with ETL/ELT, Change Data Capture (CDC), event streaming and API-driven integration patterns.
Experience implementing and managing enterprise data governance frameworks and tools.
Proven experience with Apache Kafka or similar streaming platforms in high-volume transactional environments.
