Job Purpose

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor will work with the Vice-Chancellor in providing leadership within the University, and in delivering the University strategy, objectives, and core purpose.

Reporting to the Vice Chancellor, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC) will provide day-to-day leadership in both academic and administrative functions of the University, including Finance.

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to:

  • Formulating and implementing policies, regulations, standards and guidelines that create a framework for academic excellence, as well as the effective management, implementation and evaluation of University programmes and activities.
  • Overall direction and organization of activities in Finance and Administration within the University.
  • Ensuring business development geared towards the sustainability and advancement of the University, as demanded by a dynamic, ambitious institution.
  • Developing, implementing and monitoring quality assurance and risk mitigation systems that will enable RU meet and maintain the highest standards in teaching, learning, scholarly output, and operational efficiency.
  • Developing strategies to attract, retain, empower, and motivate qualified and experienced staff, in line with the desired University culture.
  • Planning, coordinating and evaluating the optimal use of instructional facilities and resources of the University in liaison with Deans and Heads of Departments / Sections.
  • Ensuring administrative and regulatory compliance of the University.
  • Any other responsibility as assigned by the Vice Chancellor and other relevant organs of the University.

    Duties and Responsibilities Academic / Professional Qualifications & Work Experience
  • Ph.D. degree or equivalent from a recognized University.
  • At least 10 years’ working experience in a recognized University, or such other appropriate organization, at a senior level.
  • A minimum of 7 years working experience in a senior administrative or financial management position.
  • Professional accounting qualifications such as CPA (K), ACCA, and membership of relevant recognized professional bodies will be advantageous.

    Skill Requirements
  • Proven skills in strategic management with the ability to formulate, communicate and execute a clear academic vision.
  • Must exhibit strong leadership and administrative experience in higher education or such other appropriate
    organisations with proven ability to engage and manage diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the structural, legislative and regulatory framework governing University education in Kenya and beyond.
  • Evidence of experience in management of financial planning systems, budgets, risk mitigation and procurement procedures.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of academic programme development, implementation, management and assessment at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Excellent communication, organization and multitasking skills.
  • Ability to develop, mentor, inspire and mobilize others towards a common goal.
  • Be of high ethical and integrity standards; and must comply with Chapter Six of the Kenyan Constitution, and Riara values.

    Appointment
  • The Deputy Vice Chancellor shall hold office for a duration of five (5) years (renewable), subject to performance appraisals.
