Job Description

The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was founded in 1970 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations seconded by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia.

The Institute got its name from the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae).

AHRI is a biomedical research institute that works in developing tools for prevention, control and treatment of mycobacterium and other diseases of public healthy importance through applied and basic biomedical research and training.

Purpose Statement

The Research Training Coordinator works with the Scientific Director, researchers, staff, and different Universities in Ethiopia and abroad to ensure that research training is successfully delivered according to partnership agreements and in line with the Strategic Aims and Objectives of the Armauer Hansen Research Institute AHRI.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership to, coordinates and implements postgraduate, in-service, short term and other research training activities at the Institute
  • Develops research training plans for the Institute in consultation with research team leaders, the Project Operations Manager and the Scientific Director
  • Ensures that training deliverables are achieved, deadlines met and budgets maintained according to annual, monthly and weekly plans.
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation system for research training and regular monitoring of activities.
  • Coordinates internal communications and ensures that research projects interact and work together to deliver training objectives.
  • Ensures timely reporting on progress of training activities; prepares quarterly progress reports, detailing progress on the output targets, and the activities undertaken in support as well as disbursement of funds.
  • Ensures development of, pooling and access to training resources and facilitates sharing of information among trainees, supervisors, mentors, stakeholders and partners.
  • Coordinates training seminars, conferences, meetings, presentation forums and other means of communication
    between trainees, supervisors and partners
  • Coordinates travel arrangements for trainees, exchange visitors, trainers, supervisors, guest speakers and other contributors to training programs and scheduled activities.
  • Reviewing research proposals & submit to institutes review board (IRB)
  • provide essential service in the IRB
  • Write grant proposals and applications for research training: identify, develop and respond to public grant calls and opportunities for training in the areas of public health.
  • Initiate the creation of materials including publicity documents, workshop contents and website information.
  • Undertake any other related tasks as requested by the Scientific Director of AHRI

    Job Requirements

    Required Qualification, Experiences & Competencies:

  • MA in Business Administration/MSc in Public Health And six (6) years’ work experience OR
  • BA in Business Administration/BSc in Public Health And eight (8) years’ work experience
  • Minimum of four years’ as Training Coordinator in a higher education facility or Project Coordinator in multilateral projects.

  • Demonstrated team leadership skills in change and transition management.
  • Excellent report writing and presentation skills, command of written and spoken English.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills.
  • Fast writing skill (Minute reading) & good command & computer skill
