Organizational Description:

  • The Ugandan Water Project (UWP), through its exclusive implementing organization, Red Rhino Development (RRD), implements and advocates for safe and sustainably managed water, sanitation, and hygiene resources across Uganda, deploying the best available version of each resource and working collaboratively with local stakeholders to ensure they last.

  • UWP is an international non-governmental organization based in Rochester, USA, founded in 2008. RRD is a Ugandan company limited by guarantee, registered in 2015. The UWP/RRD Ugandan office is located in Yesu Amala, Nansana, Wakiso District.

    Program Background

  • UWP/RRD currently employs four key solutions to meet the unique water challenges of Ugandan communities.

  • The four water solutions that UWP/RRD currently implements are rainwater catchment systems, borehole well rehabilitations, borehole well drilling, and point-of-use water filter distribution.

  • UWP/RRD is stepping up its approaches to delivery of water services. Believing that the future of Uganda’s water supply to match rapid urbanization lies in motorized or gravity pipe networks, UWP/RRD is partnering with other stakeholders to upgrade hand pump-based boreholes to motorization in Luwero and Wakiso District with state-of-the-art pre-paid water metering.

  • Recognizing that water is needed for more than just drinking, UWP/RRD also distributes and constructs handwashing stands of various sizes.

  • Alongside physical infrastructure installation, UWP/RRD prioritizes community training focused on water safety and hygiene practices.

  • Quality and impact are evaluated by conducting assessments at regular intervals using digital data tools and managing data in the industry-leading, open-access data platform, mWater.

  • In addition to project-based initiatives, UWP/RRD is investing in water-point sustainability through systemsbased approaches. UWP/RRD has developed, and is in the midst of implementing AquaTrust, a market-based program to hand pump operation and maintenance.

  • In addition to this program, UWP/RRD is preparing a commercial water filter sales program, also under the AquaTrust brand.

  • Furthermore, UWP/RRD is actively supporting the Ministry of Water and Environment uptake of mWater as a tool to collect and manage Ugandan water point data at various levels of government.

    Job Purpose

  • Reporting to the Program Manager the Sanitation and Hygiene Assistant will be responsible for planning, budgeting and direction of sanitation and hygiene promotion implementation as an integral part of RRD’s WASH programming.

  • S/He will specifically be charged with building the capacity of RRD and the local government staff in understanding and sound employment of established participatory methods for hygiene and sanitation promotion and general behavior change models.

  • In addition, the position holder will evaluate the impact of hygiene promotion activities and be at the forefront of designing alternative implementation strategies. Over 75% of the time will be field work.

    Specific Responsibilities

    Program implementation

  • Conduct assessments of barriers, enabling factors and effective communication methods/channels to instigate changes in key behaviours and develop, design, modify or adopt culturally appropriate media, messages and IEC materials to promote sanitation and hygiene behavior.

  • Spearhead grass root implementation of hygiene and sanitation promotion activities in a participatory manner, make optimal use of the existing local government and community structures for hygiene and sanitation promotion.

  • Build capacity of RRD staff in sanitation and
    hygiene promotion methodologies to reinforce and complement community training and engagement for full WASH package delivery.

  • Promote access to and, the hygienic use of water and sanitation facilities in the community, institutions and at households.

  • Facilitate communities to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills for attitude and behavior change related to water, sanitation and hygiene.

  • Strengthen RRD’s partnership and working relationship /experience sharing with District Health Offices in RRD’s Districts of core operation.

  • Lead and raise RRD profile in delivery of sanitation and hygiene interventions and targets in its major programs like AquaTrust and donor funded projects like Water To Thrive, Water Time, etc.

  • Sensitize water management committees and communities on hygienic maintenance of water sources, ensure communities value safe water supply and promote observance of a safe water chain.

  • In collaboration with District Health Offices, build the capacity of Village Health Teams (VHTs), Water and Sanitation Committees (WSCs), in participatory methodologies for sanitation and hygiene promotion, empower them and ensure sound employment of the methodologies in the community.

  • Prepares detail implementation plan, monitor, and follow up the timely implementation of activities.

  • Design content and methodology of the Community Hygiene and Sanitation mobilization campaigns.

  • Collect, analyze, and compile reports from hygiene and sanitation activities and propose better implementation strategy.

  • Any other duty assigned by the supervisor in line with the above.

    Requirements / Qualifications:

  • Degree/Diploma in; Environmental Health Science, Public Health, Health Education and Promotion, Rural Sanitation, Community Health, or related field.

  • Two-year experience in Sanitation and hygiene promotion in NGO or Government organizations.

  • Proven knowledge of PHAST and CLTS.

  • Computer literacy in using Google Docs.

  • Fluency in English and local Ugandan language.


    Skills and Abilities

  • Familiarity with the Uganda’s multi-cultural contexts.

  • Ability to work in stressful conditions, with limited access to services.

  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision and in a highly results oriented work culture.

  • Knowledge, skill and experience in participatory methods for community development and mobilization.
