Reporting to the Project Manager, the successful candidate should be able to demonstrate sound
knowledge of biodiversity, forests and seascape management as well as nature conservation practices based on experience working in the environmental sector. The incumbent should have a
passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world. The Biodiversity, Forest
& Seascape Specialist will assist in information gathering, consultations, report writing, site
visits, workshops, and management of the portfolio.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinating and providing appropriate technical support to the implementation and development of the Biodiversity, Forestry and Seascapes portfolio in Regional Centre of Excellence (RCoE) and RCMRD.

  • Supporting the implementation of the RCoE project portfolio, including organizing tasks,
    liaising with experts, monitoring their progress in delivering high-quality assessments, project reports, and outputs, and supporting project progress meetings.

  • Reviewing the Global Biodiversity Framework with an aim of understanding and helping the project countries to domesticate it.

  • Supporting the national biodiversity strategy and action plan implementation in the project countries.

  • Leading in the development of the SOPACA report (State of Protected and Conserved Areas Report)

  • Supporting the countries attached to RCoE in achieving the Global Biodiversity Targets as well as supporting RCMRD tasks related to the Convention on Biological Diversity

  • Providing technical advice on the implementation of biodiversity and ecosystem national frameworks e.g. NBSAP.

  • Providing technical expertise and supporting to plan, manage, coordinate, and monitor biodiversity conservation activities.

  • Analyzing the current state of biodiversity, undertake relevant research, and highlight potential improvement opportunities.

  • Reviewing the existing policies and provisions related to biodiversity conservation and ensuring compliance with related regulations and policies.

  • Identifying regulatory gaps and proposing amendments to existing standards and requirements.

  • Identifying, pursuing, strategizing, and supporting initiatives and efforts focused on
    biodiversity conservation, forestry
    and seascapes.

  • Providing technical expertise to facilitate the execution of biodiversity conservation and
    sustainable land/resource management components and activities.

  • Working with the Capacity Building Expert to build the capacity of the project countries to report on their biodiversity conservation and forestry obligations.

  • Promoting adoption of best practices related to biodiversity conservation.

  • Promoting and supporting the development of Protected Area (PA), Management effectiveness and Governance Equity Plans.

  • Supporting the establishment of sustainable financing mechanisms for efficient management of Protected Areas.

  • Supervising a team of data experts linked to Biodiversity, Forests and Seascape Ecosystem Management.

  • Any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

    Required Qualification

  • Master’s degree in Biodiversity Conservation, Ecology, Forestry, Environmental Sciences, or Natural Resource Management.

  • At least 5 years’ professional experience in the biodiversity conservation, ecosystems management in sectors such as forestry, biodiversity, seascape and climate change.

  • Demonstrated experience in forest monitoring, remote sensing and GIS.

  • Good knowledge of Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), Global Biodiversity Targets, NBSAPS, climate change negotiations and REDD Readiness.

  • Previous practical experience in similar tasks in biodiversity conservation, protected areas, land mapping and land use is required.

  • Strong knowledge of biodiversity, natural resources management, institutional development, policy, and economics preferred.

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Strong written and oral communications skills
