Introduction

The job-holder will report to the Chief Sub-editor.

The incumbent will be tasked with ensuring that the Star is lively, attractive, accurate, conforms to house style and is delivered on time to production

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or relevant field.
  • Two years’ journalism experience, preferably in a busy media environment.

    The Person
  • Excellent command of English with advanced written and verbal skills.
  • Meticulous, a keen eye for detail.
  • Energetic, self-driven.
  • Strong sense of ethics.
  • Team player with excellent interpersonal skills.

    Key Responsibilities
  • Place stories and photos on the template to fit assigned space in Design.
  • Ensure all page deadlines, production deadlines strictly adhered to.
  • Liaise with designers to ensure photos are well placed and templates adhere to the newspaper’s prototype.
  • Ensure that copy is grammatically correct and free of spelling errors.
  • Observe the house style.
  • Rewrite stories to place the most important and interesting information at the top so the story flows and reads well.
  • Must be familiar with pyramid style, J101 a must.
  • Write catchy headlines, kickers, correct captions.
  • Write sharp, lively and accurate intros that both draw in the reader and capture the essence of the story.
  • Exercise strong news judgement.
  • Be able to spot important angles buried in stories and elevate them.
  • Be proactive, suggest stories and follow-ups.
  • Be up to date on current affairs.
    Check facts.
  • Call reporters, correspondents to confirm information, fill holes,
    provide additional information.
  • Do research as necessary.
  • Add background, a context where needed.
  • Ensure balance, fair comment and best journalism standards.
  • Be alert to potential libel, consult editors and legal adviser before story is placed on page.
