The role

The writer/editor is a position we’re hiring in our Nairobi office. The role will report to the Country Editor-in-Chief.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Collect, verify, fact-check and analyze newsworthy information thoroughly.

  • Create and deliver news stories (articles, videos and/or social posts) with the audience’s perspective in mind.

  • Contact, interview and research sources.

  • Abide by Journalism’s ethics and codes.

  • Collaborate with reporters, video editors, social media managers, chief editor, producers etc.

  • Stay up-to-date with the latest current events by properly monitoring news, attending events and building contacts and sources for use in future stories.

  • Assist and guide the content team with developing story ideas and stories.

  • Ensuring timely processing of news material.

  • Coordinating coverage of current affairs on a day-to-day basis.

  • Rewriting articles and developing content ideas as per the target audience of the website.

  • Meeting editorial standards of the new Pulse live website.

  • Verifying facts and accuracy of all news reports before they are published.

  • Re-writing and editing copy to ensure it is readable and appeals to the target audience.

  • Ensuring articles have catchy headlines and appropriate photos or illustrations.

  • Checking content for plagiarism and authenticity.

    Skills that would make a candidate successful in this role

  • Experience with content marketing and various content formats such as articles, social and video and an ability to drive readership.

  • Excellent communication and story-telling skills.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

  • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.

  • A lot of energy, passion and enthusiasm
