General

This role is for an upcoming funding from Transforming Faces Canada and employment is contingent upon securing the grant.

  • With the supervision and support of the program manager, to identify people with cleft lip and palate and severe facial disfigurements in rural communities and arrange hospital treatment for them.
  • To educate patients, families and communities on facial conditions and the treatment available to them
  • Contribute to the planning of programs, including the setting of targets and the targeting of specific geographical areas, as well as expansion into new geographical areas
  • Coordinate patient groups, arrange transport for them and their parents/carers to and from the hospital, arrange accommodation and register patients at the hospital
  • Manage and supervise Trained Speech Therapy providers and follow their activities, particularly the community based speech therapy; and parental education;
  • Conduct a community based assessment to register children who have speech difficulties because of cleft;
  • In collaboration with health and social affairs offices, identify people with cleft lip and palate and severe facial disfigurements in rural communities and arrange hospital treatment for them;
  • Organize awareness creation interventions through different modalities for the whole community and for mothers group
  • Provide the necessary support to patients and their guardians throughout their time in the care of Project Harar Ethiopia, ensuring that they are recuperating well, have any questions answered and respond to issues that may arise
  • Work very closely with the comprehensive team at Yekatit-12 hospital and arrange cleft patients for assessment on a monthly basis
    Work very closely with the Trained Speech Therapy providers’ field office in the E&W Harargie Zone and surrounding.
  • Be a backstop to Trained Speech Therapy providers’, for the work they do for PHE
  • Provide frequent monitoring and supportive supervision visits to implementing woredas and Trained Speech Therapy providers’; and evaluate project delivery by the Trained Speech Therapy providers’ and community based volunteers;
  • Prepare and submit comprehensive activity reports to the program manager on a monthly basis
  • Identify key partners that will potentially collaborate with Project Harar, particularly organizations working on children,
  • Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with local government officials, health and social workers, local communities and NGOs to ensure that PHE’s objectives are met;
  • Support new initiatives by PHE.
  • Together with the program manager, ensure
    that the work done by PHE continues to be relevant and meets the needs of people in rural communities
  • guide the efficient and effective day-to-day operations of the project in the field
  • Provide support to Trained Speech Therapy providers’ to ensure that they are able to carry out their duties and fulfill the mission of PHE

  • Work with the finance and administration team to make sure that project implementation are in line with the agreed budget;
  • Report on the expenditure for each mission conducted; record full patient details after each mission, including before and after photographs, and enter patients’ data in to the database and report to the Addis office on a timely manner
  • Develop success story for best cases and share that to the relevant stakeholders
  • Communicate with donors and government agencies with project success and new developments in the organization, on a regular basis;
  • Assist the program manager to develop marketing and communications materials that properly reflect the organization and its work and contribute to the content on the Project Harar website www.projectharar.org

    Duty station:

    Addis Ababa/Dire Dawa/Harar closely work with PHE head office staff in Addis Ababa

    Job Requirements

    Person’s specification

  • Well-articulated, eager to learn, able to navigate in his/her role, flexible and able to cope up with changes and challenges in an organizational setup, proactive and dedicated to deliver project objectives.
  • Young and motivated, able to be a resource person for future expansion thereof.
  • Able to represent the organization in the zone in dealing with business matters and have a strong communication and coordination skills.
  • Passionate to work on child focused program. Willing to work out of business hours and dates and able to extensively travel in the operational woredas.
  • Fluency in Afan Oromo, Amharic and English, Willingness to be based and work at the zonal health office & Able to prepare plans, reports, clear and realistic activity timetable development, and overseeing the implementation.


    Education and experience

    B.Sc in Speech and language therapy or Nursing
    Required work Experience: -

  • 2 years experience.
  • Experience and knowledge of the Ethiopia health care system would be an added value. Candidate who has previous knowledge and experience on disability will be equally preferred. Female applicants are highly encouraged to apply.
