About the position:

Reporting to PCI’s Africa Regional Director and working closely with other support staff at PCI’s International Office, the MD is responsible for the oversight and management of the AfriScout enterprise, and provides overall technical and administrative supervision to the initiative.

S/he will be responsible for all aspects of business strategy, marketing and promotion, customer education and adoption, stakeholder management with a broad range of partners, monitoring and evaluation, and quality assurance with guidance and support from AfriScout’s Global Advisors.

The MD will represent AfriScout and is responsible for communications with donors, partners, sub-contractors, and other stakeholders including the general public.

  • The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of pastoralist communities and livestock management as well as digital solutions for development.
  • The successful candidate should be an energetic leader who is excited about the challenge of running a start-up.
  • S/he will possess strong project management skills including budget management, HR, and administration, be an effective communicator and negotiator, and have a passion for field work.
  • S/he will have experience in managing a start-up social enterprise or market-based interventions in an NGO context.
  • S/he will be enthusiastic about the opportunity to work on a social enterprise project that could have a significant impact on some of the most marginalized populations in Kenya, Tanzania, and across the continent.

    Key Programmatic Priorities:
  • The four key priorities for the MD over the next 3-5 years upon which performance will be measured are:
  • Scale – Deepening and widening product reach both directly and through strategic partnerships.
  • Commercial viability – Ensuring AfriScout is meeting revenue targets through direct sales, grants, and contracts.
  • Service quality – Ensuring provision of well-trained field-level customer support as well as oversight of effective debugging and appropriate functionality of the app.
  • Social impact – Rigorous monitoring and measurement of product impact on herds, rangelands, and communities.

    Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide visionary leadership and oversight for all AfriScout operations.
  • Lead, recruit, and effectively supervise a small team of office-based staff as well as support a cadre of part-time, field-based distributors/customer service providers.
  • Plan and support community mapping exercises and product orientations in counties.
  • Lead the design and oversee the execution of robust, multi-channel marketing plan.
  • Deploy an effective customer support management system.
  • Interface with software development team to ensure
    product functionality and usability.
  • Oversee and manage the operational, financial, HR, and administrative needs of AfriScout and PCI Kenya, including budget management, high-quality program and financial reporting, and grant/contract compliance.
  • With staff, partners, and sub-contractors, translate project goals, objectives, and milestones into implementable strategies and plans.
  • Liaise with county and national government, telecoms, collaborating NGOs and other relevant actors.
  • Represent PCI and AfriScout at external meetings, in the media, and other fora.
  • Actively position, cultivate partnerships, and pursue new business opportunities for
    AfriScout and PCI Kenya.
  • Participate in PCI’s innovation efforts and in teams on innovation initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

    Position Parameters / Special Responsibilities Required:
  • This position is based in Nairobi, Kenya with up to 50% travel to various pastoral regions where the application is active. Some travel to the US and within the region (Tanzania and Ethiopia) may be required.

    Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in business, marketing, or a relevant field.
  • Minimum of eight years of professional experience, with at least four years of experience working in a start-up environment or leading social enterprise development activities in BoP markets in Kenyan rural areas.
  • Experience with pastoral populations highly desired.
  • Tech savvy required, digital development experience desired; product or software development experience a plus.
  • Highly conversant about and comfortable working in a start-up environment.
  • Flexibility and ability to transition and actively engage across a variety of roles and settings
  • From the village to the board room.
  • Track record of completing projects and building things, big or small.
  • Fluency in English and Kiswahili required; any other local languages a plus.
  • Experience managing and growing teams.
  • Strong local networks; experience and relationships working with players in pastoral counties, the livestock sector, Kenya BoP markets, and in telecommunications is highly desired.
  • Proven ability to motivate and inspire.

    Strong analytical and communication skills: ability to effectively synthesize data and prepare clear, compelling, and high-quality reports and presentations.

  • Strong work ethic and willingness to work a nontraditional work schedule.
  • Balance: combining patience, empathy, and honesty with the assertiveness, clout and drive to see any job through to the end.
  • Literacy in Microsoft Office and Windows applications (and corresponding Google equivalents: Sheets, Slides, and Docs)
  • A passion for the mission and values of PCI.
