Job Description

Introduction

USAID Transform WASH is a five-year activity awarded to PSI and Consortium partners SNV, IRC and Plan International (‘the Consortium’) to test and develop market-based models that will increase demand for and supply of quality, affordable WASH products and services.

In the last three years, we have been introducing simple sanitation products in collaboration with national suppliers and our business partners in the forty-one weredas.

However, product source has been the major problem in our journey so far. This design competition is organized as part of our effort to give solution for the product source problem.

Main Goal:

  • To identify the best local sanitation product with technical and market potential to
    evolve as viable solutions to improve the sanitation status of our target audience.

    Specific Objectives:

    This design competition has the following three specific objectives:
  • To evaluate, select, and award three best concept of sanitation product designs with clear technical and market feasibility.
  • To support the prototyping of the selected design concepts in partnership with the design owners and private businesses.
  • To establish business cases and link the viable design concepts with angel investors to get the design concept to fully be developed.

    1. Scope and Terms of Design Evaluation Scope:

    We organized this design competition at a national level which is open for all technological institutes, organizational and individual professionals engaged in the technical design of sanitation or related products.

    Teams from T-WASH, its partners and invited sanitation professionals will carry out the evaluation based on the predefined evaluation criteria.

    Terms of the Competition: the competition has three categories

  • Latrine products design (innovative latrine components design solutions or a complete latrine design) which we can develop with wereda level artisans.
  • Latrine products design (innovative latrine component design solution or a complete design) which we can serve as a prototype and fully develop with domestic manufacturing capacity.
  • Hygiene products like hand washing facilities, and menstrual hygiene products.
  • For all categories, we have four levels of related evaluation criteria. Each criteria has detailed terms of reference as a measure to evaluate the significance of designs forwarded by contestants.

    Job Requirements

    A. Technical capabilities:

    This criterion is to evaluate the technical viability of competing design options.

    I. Design functionality/sensibility description: Contestants are required to give a detailed description of the design components, level of technological requirements, required inputs, and level of expertise to develop the design concept as a complete product. They are also required to classify their designs in terms of the two categories mentioned above.

    a. Inputs to develop the design and where to source (obtain) inputs locally;

    b. Technological requirements and where to source (obtain);

    c. Level of expertise and the scope (ability) of expertise transfer;

    d. Simplicity of the design for product developers to apply easily

    e. Openness of the design for further customization by developers

    f. Description of designing tools applied and level of availability at local level

    II. Ownership Claims: Contestants are expected to prove that there is no third-party design ownership claim. Contestants who submit a customized/modified design should be able to prove that the original design is from open source.

    III.Unique value proposition: Contestants are required to give detailed description of their design unique value and to what extent it addresses the sanitation problem of our rural and peri-urban community

    IV. Summary of technological fitness: Contestants are
    required to give a summary of how fit their sanitation product design concept is and the level to which their design feasibility in the realities of the country’s technological realities (capacity).

    B. Scope of design prototyping:

    Based on the competition categories specified above, design contestants are required to present a level of simplicity to test their design concept in terms of

    a. The level of complexity to interpret their design by the process of prototype building

    b. Contestants are required to describe the partnership, inputs by source, and context to build prototype to test technicalities of the design.

    c. Bill of quantity and cost breakdown to build a prototype of their design concept.

    d. Level of expertise required to build a prototype and simplicity to get the prototyping test done with local partners in multiple locations

    C. Business case of designs:

    Contestants are required to give a brief description of their intended business case for their designs. Their description should start with a unit cost to develop their design to a product and goes onto discussing;

    a. Production cost by break down and estimated final consumer price;

    b. Market estimate in terms of estimated demand and supply quantities

    c. Optional ---- If there is prepared cash flow forecast.

    D. Support and Partnership:

    Contestants are required to give detailed description regarding the necessary support and partnership they look for to make their design concept practical. Their presentation should address the following points.

    a. Comparative description of their capacity against the required capabilities;

    b. The complexity level of partnership required to develop their design as a product; c. Local capabilities in terms of input and technological source availability;

    d. Public private partnership required to develop their design into a marketable product. Summary of support and partnership required at the level of prototype building, testing, market building, and expertise mobilization.

    2. Terms of Award and Selected Design Prospect Terms of Award:

    3rd Screening Session:

    In a week time, the last evaluation session shall take place to select the final three best sanitation designs based on the voting of all evaluating partners after attending presentations by each contestant.

  • Clear description of design components will be given
  • Input and technological requirements will be described in detail
  • List of product development partners
    Awards

  • 1ST ranked design gets awarded $ 2000

  • 2ND ranked design get awarded $ 1500

  • 3rd ranked design get awarded $ 1000

    Prospects of selected designs:

    The next step with the selected design is to build prototype and test the technical and market feasibility. For each of the three winning designs, prototypes will be built up and tested. The estimated allocated budget is $2000.
