<[>The Language and Cross-Cultural Facilitator (LCF) is responsible for planning, delivering and
evaluating language and intercultural training at Pre-Service, In-Service and other required
opportunities for Peace Corps/Uganda.

Working hand in hand with the Language & Cross Cultural Coordinator, the LCF is expected to offer ongoing language and intercultural support to new Volunteers by carrying out interest survey (needs assessment) of each Volunteers so as to
come out with strategies to address them in subsequent trainings.

Area of Expertise

  • Design lesson plans and deliver them to the Peace Corps Trainees/Volunteers, using
    appropriate techniques and methodology;
  • Prepare session designs in advance, which are ready to be delivered during training
    period;
  • Conduct language classes in the Ugandan language of expertise (Kupsabiny);
  • Make daily Volunteer assessments and adjust lesson plans according to the learning
    needs of Volunteers;
  • Participate in Pre-Service Training Research for collection of teaching materials relevant
    for language, technical and Cross-Cultural training;
  • Tutor learners with special needs as, and when, such needs arise.

    Intercultural Informant and Guide

  • Using your knowledge as a Ugandan, act as a guide in teaching about Ugandan cultures,
    with specific emphasis on the uniqueness of your cultural grouping;
  • Use your expertise in language teaching to impart cultural knowledge to Trainees during
    formal sessions;
  • Work closely with homestay families in fulfilling the Trainer role for the Trainees;
  • Act as a link between the Trainees and homestay families in clarifying any training
    related issues that may arise;
  • Perform daily check-ins for the Trainees to gauge their adjustment process;
  • Equip Trainees/Volunteers with skills to take care of their own safety and security by
    helping them learn the appropriate language, understand the local customs and cultural
    practices and dynamics of the political and social set up of the communities that may
    impact on Volunteers’ lives.

    Training Design/implementation

  • Participate in designing an integrated Pre-Service Training Program;
  • Integrate technical training through close collaboration and guidance from Program
    Managers and Specialists.

    Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintain file of written lesson plans, handouts, and other language supplementary
    materials used during training;
  • Submit weekly reports to the Language & Cross-Cultural Coordinator detailing the
    progress of each Volunteer, what has been covered, what needs improvement, and the
    following week’s plans;
  • Inform the Language & Cross-Cultural Coordinator periodically about the learning
    progress of each Volunteer, and on matters related to the Volunteer’s general suitability
    for service.

    Team Member

  • Participate in team building activities designed
    to develop team spirit and responsibility;
  • Attend meetings as scheduled;
  • Share individual talents and expertise with colleagues.
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Language & Cross-Cultural Coordinator and the Training Manager.

    Minimum Qualifications and Experience
  • Diploma in the area of specialization
  • Experience in teaching a local Ugandan language to Peace Corps Trainees
  • Experience in teaching and analyzing a Ugandan language
  • Experience in adult education training and community development
  • Good interpersonal, counseling and intercultural skills
  • Excellent communication skills in English and at least one Ugandan language
  • Good judgment and problem solver
  • Management and supervision experience and / or aptitude
  • Money and resources management experience and /or aptitude
  • Willingness to live away from home in a training location for the duration of the training
    (in a rented house or Guest House)
  • Willingness to be on call all days of training including Sundays and put in extra time past
    language training to serve as Coordinator of the local Training Satellite.
