For two decades, PATH has been assisting Kenya’s health sector through partnerships with local and national governments, community organizations, civil societies and the private sector to build capacity to improve the health and well-being of Kenyans.

We built our core strengths in adolescent and reproductive health as well as programming to address HIV/AIDS.

Other strategic objectives include improved health outcomes for women and children, strengthening implementation science around selected integrated HIV/TB prevention, treatment, care and support interventions, access, use and acceptance of sexual and reproductive health services, strengthening health information systems in country, as well as contribute to the prevention and management of non-communicable diseases.

More recently, we have expanded our programs to address digital health and other new technologies for health systems. Kenya is one of PATH’s largest country-based programs.

In addition to operating as a country program, PATH in Nairobi, Kenya, is also a hub for global and regional shared services: Finance, IT, legal, audit compliance, HR, Grants & Contracts, Facilities, communication, etc.

This role primarily serves as the Director of Kenya Country Program (0.8 FTE) and will also oversee the Nairobi Global hub activities (0.2 FTE).

This role will represent PATH locally and internationally and elevate our standing as the leading NGO in global health innovation, especially in the development and commercialization of devices, diagnostics, drugs, vaccines and program services.

The Country Director is responsible for business development to enable a diversified and sustainable portfolio and for quality execution of solutions and projects across all of PATH’s platforms.

Main responsibilities:

  • Responsible for country staff, country operations management and office management in partnership with programs and shared services leaders.
  • Builds capacity through effective talent management practices and identifies and manages financial, legal and technical risks in collaboration with subject matter experts from other areas of the organization.
  • Develop and nurture partnerships to ensure local to global impact wherever possible in Kenya.
  • Mobilizes the technical, programmatic and operational resources and expertise to meet PATH Kenya needs.
  • Serves as the legal representative for PATH in Kenya.
  • Responsible for PATH’s organizational strategy to harness strengths across teams to maximize our impact and value at the country level. This will be accomplished through strong leadership to ensure programs are executed with the highest quality, have a sustainable program design, demonstrate value for money, and ultimately improve the health of targeted populations.
  • Act as a key leader in global innovation efforts, particularly focused on fostering East African innovation ecosystems by collaborating with academia, government, multilateral donors, private sector, other incubators, NGOs, and corporations.
  • Responsible for ensuring that the Nairobi global hub and regional shared services are structured and operate accordingly.
  • Support and assure accountability for functional reporting of hub personnel into the country office structure (timecards, travel authorization, etc).

    Reporting lines:

    This position reports to the Senior Director, Country Programs. The Kenya country program divisions and departments will report
    to the Director, Kenya Country Program. While the hub personnel will most commonly report into the central shared services for technical accountability, this position will collaborate with their counterpart in Asia and the various HQ functions to define the requirements and key performance indicators for the hub.

    Required Experience

  • Advanced degree in public health, medicine, business or related field, and a minimum of 12 years of experience that includes advanced technical competency in one or more of the following areas: Health systems, maternal child health and nutrition; HIV/TB; non-communicable diseases; sexual and reproductive health and rights; or technology innovations such as digital health.
  • A combination of education and experience will be considered.
    Demonstrated success serving in an executive or senior leadership role overseeing all of the functions and operations of the entity.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading shared/services regionally or globally across multiple countries and geographies.
  • Proven record of business development, resource mobilization, and partnership building in a competitive landscape.
  • Proven ability to develop business and organizational vision by implementing a strategic roadmap.
  • Record of accomplishment in successful networking as well as effective interactions with donors and collaborating agencies, including private, public, government and non-profit entities.
  • Knowledge in development of new health technologies, product development, and implementation of programs in low resource settings.
  • Knowledge of in-country needs and opportunities,
  • Effective leadership skills and progressive people management experience, including managing through senior leaders, systems and processes.
  • Ability to effectively scope problems, anticipate and pre-empt emerging issues and make decisions with conviction even in highly ambiguous contexts.
  • Reputation as a flexible team player with the ability to forge alignment in a matrix organization and effectively collaborate across boundaries and teams.
  • Record of accomplishment in creating and leading high-performing and adaptable teams across cultures and geographies and mentoring global health professionals at different career stages.
  • Proven ability to oversee leaders that are responsible for the conceptualization and design of projects from proposal development and fundraising strategies to program delivery and monitoring and evaluation.
  • Knowledge of global health trends as well as East African regional health issues, particularly the devolution and decentralization of Kenya’s health sector.
  • Demonstrated emotional intelligence, discretion and strategic agility.
  • Fluent in English with excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Willing to travel internationally and domestically and internationally up to 25%.
