PATH Communications Officer, Center for Vaccine Innovation and Access Jobs in Malawi

Job Description

  • PATH is a global nonprofit dedicated to achieving health equity. With more than 40 years of experience forging multisector partnerships, and with expertise in science, economics, technology, advocacy, and dozens of other specialties, PATH develops and scales up innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing health challenges.

  • PATH’s Center for Vaccine Innovation and Access (CVIA) spans every stage of the long and complex process of vaccine research, development, and introduction to make lifesaving vaccines widely available to women, children, and communities across the world.

  • CVIA’s current portfolio encompasses more than two dozen vaccines either in development or already in use to protect against 18 different diseases, including diarrheal disease, malaria, meningitis, pneumonia, polio, and typhoid. We work in partnership with national health ministries, pharmaceutical manufacturers, donors, international financing and regulatory organizations, and many others.

  • Specifically, this role will join the CVIA team to support expansion of malaria vaccination into new areas, while collaborating with PATH colleagues, the Ministry of Health, and other partners to maintain support for areas already receiving the vaccine.

  • Additionally, the role includes helping and to support efforts to accelerate access to typhoid conjugate vaccines (TCVs) and ensuring coordination within Malawi with efforts of PATH’s Malaria Control and Evaluation Partnership in Africa (MACEPA).

  • PATH is currently seeking a Communications Officer who will work across a diverse set of internal and external partners in Malawi to support immunization and malaria efforts in support of the Ministry of Health. This role will be responsible for helping to define and deliver communications and social mobilization strategies while contributing to crosscutting regional and global teams and priorities.

    Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with PATH, Ministry of Health colleagues, and partners in developing and executing communications and social mobilization strategies, work plans, and activities that align with and support malaria vaccination efforts in areas of Malawi and national introduction of TCVs.

  • Assist PATH colleagues, partners, and others in developing messages, briefing packets, and other material about malaria,
immunization in general, and malaria vaccination, to sustain and increase vaccine acceptance and uptake in communities.

  • Identify and engage stakeholders at national and subnational levels to galvanize interest and support for the malaria vaccine and TCVs.

  • Help align PATH interactions and communications with the National Malaria Control Program across malaria vaccine and MACEPA objectives.

  • Help to design and implement stakeholder meetings and workshops, as needed.

  • Help to define processes for issues management and for maintaining risk communications plans.

  • Help to engage media and monitor social and traditional media for reports on malaria, immunization, and malaria vaccination.

  • Document lessons learned in the continued implementation of the malaria vaccine programme.

  • Work in close partnership with national and subnational government officials and with immunization and malaria sub-working groups.

  • Coordinate story-gathering field visits that include photography, videography, interviews, and other efforts to document progress in defined areas.

    Required Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or higher, preferably in communications, public policy, global health, or related field.

  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in designing and managing advocacy, communications, and social mobilization strategies for health.

  • Experience working with national-level stakeholders as well as civil society organizations and communities.

  • Experience facilitating strong relationships and working within multi-country, cross-functional and diverse teams

  • Excellent verbal and written communication with the ability to tailor approaches for various audiences and channels.

  • Fluency in English required.

  • Willingness to travel, as needed.

  • Understanding of immunization programs and health systems strongly preferred.
