PAPDA Research Associate: Addressing Gender Bias Within Humanitarian Organizations and Gender-based Violence in Emergencies Programming Jobs in Ethiopia


  • Our team is implementing a project that aims to assess gender biases among humanitarian actors implementing gender-based violence in emergencies (GBViE) programs.

  • It aims to pilot behavioral design innovations among humanitarian organizations to ultimately improve the monitoring and evaluation of GBViE programs.

    We are seeking a Research Associate to

  • implement baseline data collection among humanitarian practitioners and organizations in Ethiopia,

  • participate in the development of interventions to address gender bias,

  • pilot test the interventions.

  • The Research Associate will be based in Addis Ababa but travel to field sites may be required.

  • The Research Associate will work closely with academic researchers and other project staff to perform a variety of tasks including, but not limited to, the following:

    Fieldwork-related activities

  • Prepare research instruments, including consent forms, and translating them into different languages (and back-translating to English).

  • Digitize the survey instrument and upload it to tablets for electronic data collection.

  • Prepare and submit the required documents to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for the ethical review of consent forms and survey instruments.

  • Obtain approvals from local authorities in coordination with our partners.

  • Recruit and train field staff for quantitative and qualitative data collection activities.

  • Set-up and run data quality checks.

  • Manage field logistics and procurement of equipment and supplies.

  • Manage relationships with local organizations
    and authorities where the study will take place.

  • Clean the raw data and participate in analysis.

  • Organize and run intervention co-design workshops

  • Oversee intervention implementation and collection of monitoring data.

    Management and Reporting Activities

  • Keep track of the project expenses and timeline.

  • Prepare reports and deliverables for the donor.

  • Maintain permanent communication with the field team during data collection and with the Principal Investigators, project partners, and the donor throughout the full lifecycle of the project.

    Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a field related to public health, or social sciences.

  • At least one year of relevant experience designing, implementing, or managing quantitative and qualitative research projects in Ethiopia.

  • Experience running research related to gender equality, gender-based violence.

  • Experience within the humanitarian sector

  • Ability to present information in a structured and insightful manner, both written and orally.

  • Proficiency in English and Amharic is required.

    Desirable Experience

    • Master’s degree in a field related to public health, or social sciences.

    • Knowledge of quantitative analysis software, i.e. Stata

    • Experience in and good understanding of social and cultural aspects of gender-based violence.
