The successful applicant will have extensive and demonstrable experience in leading successful campaign and advocacy strategies at the global level, as well as extensive experience providing leadership and guidance in managing high profile external relationships and events.

S/he will be a team player, who is comfortable working within dynamic and evolving campaigning contexts, with exceptional oral and written communication skills to facilitate dialogue and develop high-quality internal and external communication products.

The scope of this role includes:

  • Supporting insider lobbying: the presence of Oxfam, especially our Executive Director Winnie Byanyima within high profile / level spaces gives us the opportunity to challenge and engage world leaders on their policies that perpetuate inequality, and how they might reduce it.
  • Outsider mobilisation: with our allies in the Fight Inequality Alliance and others, we mobilise publics offline and online to challenge the status quo of extreme economic inequality and help build the movement to tackle it.
  • Public campaigning and engagement: at both global or national level, we use key external (and internal) moments to press for the policy changes we want to see, using online and offline mobilisation tactics.

    Key Responsibilities

  • Lead in building Oxfam’s reputation and status as a credible voice on inequality with global influencers, thought leaders and global & regional development institutions.
  • Support the work of the OI Executive Director on her external engagements that are relevant to tackling inequality: managing key external relationships, providing strategic advice and coordinating with internal stakeholders.
  • Lead in developing a strategy to build understanding amongst public and political audiences of the root causes and human impacts of extreme inequality, and propose and build evidence for possible solutions.
  • Lead the core project team related to the above: the project team will be made up of Oxfam staff with various functional expertise that will coordinate the development and implementation of our annual Commitment to Reducing Inequality Index (CRII), the delivery of Oxfam’s engagement with the World Economic Forum and its meetings, strengthening Oxfam’s engagement with Fight Inequality Alliance and growing the influence of alliance, and supporting Oxfam country teams in their national influencing work on inequality.
  • Leading the project team involves: coordinating the work of the sub-teams and individuals that are producing policy products and associated media coverage, working with Public Engagement colleagues to design and deliver public engagement, coordinating Oxfam affiliates to engage, supporting affiliates and countries in the Global South, engaging with the Fight Inequality Alliance.
  • The incumbent will work closely with other members of the global EIU core team consisting of various leads.
  • Ensure adequate communication, consultation and training support provided across the confederation, including with other campaign teams and public engagement
    teams, to facilitate participation in and implementation of key campaign moments.
  • Maintain communication between the project team and the Oxfam members of the Fight Inequality Alliance steering group.
  • Work with colleagues to raise significant funding from external sources for the inequality campaign,
  • Act as a spokesperson as required.
  • Provide project lead sign off on all materials.
  • Design an overall MEAL framework and ensure plans are in place to collect, analyse and reflect on MEAL data.

    Technical Skills, Experience & Knowledge

    Essential

    Advocacy & Campaigning

  • Minimum five years of demonstrable experience leading on the development and implementation of successful lobby and advocacy strategies at the global level.
  • Strong understanding of principles of dynamic public campaigning and engagement, and of effective influencing tactics to support campaigning outcomes.
  • Leadership: High level of strategic thinking and ability to manage high profile external engagement.
  • Ability to build & strengthen relationships with global influences & institutions.
  • Proven leadership, negotiation and team building skills and ability to work effectively with others to advance a shared agenda to tackle inequality.
  • Ability to lead projects in a clear and constructive way that inspires people to deliver.
  • Strong ability to lead and navigate complex group dynamics to build collaborative and positive team atmospheres.
  • Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills with demonstrable ability to lead, influence and motivate others.

    Communication

  • Ability to liaise with a wide range of people, both internally and externally and at many levels, with credibility, tact and diplomacy
  • Ability to get ideas across in a compelling and clear way to a variety of audiences, including written, verbal and visual communications
  • Fluent spoken and written English.

    Demonstrable affinity with the aims and objectives of the Oxfam Confederation

  • Ability to think and work in a multi-disciplinary way
  • Ability to operate effectively in a network environment
  • Able to work effectively in a multi-cultural environment
  • Sensitivity to cultural differences and gender issues, as well as the commitment to equal opportunities
  • Experience of living and working in one or more countries in the global south.

    Desirable

  • Fluency in French, Spanish and other widely spoken languages will be an advantage
  • Previous coordination experience in a multi-country and multi-stakeholder set up
  • Experience in generating significant global media coverage
  • Experience working with and/or within civil society alliances
